Discipline help!

My DS is very active, very fun, but usually listens and follows the "important" rules. However, there is one thing he does that we haven't been able to get him to stop. When we're sitting at the table, he'll pull the tablecloth. I've tried explaining what a mess he makes, I've tried telling him that if he's done, he should just say so, I've tried pushing him away from the table (he sits on a booster) and saying that he can't do that if he wants to sit at the table. But nothing's working! There doesn't seem to be a logical consquence, other than dinner's over, but then he'll want more milk before bed and how can I then make him understand, no you can't fill up on milk because you didn't finish dinner? And I don't want him to go to bed hungry!

Please help, it's driving me and DH nuts!

  • Don't use a tablecloth?

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • Ha! Isn't it funny when you don't think of the most obvious answers?

Our dining table is wood though and even though I try to get DS to use a placemat, a lot of food ends up on the side and the tablecloth just protects the table well....

  • I wouldn't even attempt a tablecloth...it seems like it's just asking for trouble! We also have a nice wood table and I always have a table runner over it, but we just fold it up so that DD can't reach it. My DD is younger than your son, but I just think that you're setting up for a problem if you have something irresistible like a large piece of fabric just sitting there.

    Good luck!
