Babies on the Brain

I just interviewed at 22 weeks pg.

and didn't tell. GASP!

I couldn't. I've waited for 3 years for an opening and I didn't want to risk it. I know it's illegal to discriminate but there were other applicants and if I told them, all they would have to do is say "we found a more qualified candidate" and then I'd kick myself and have to wait who knows how much longer for the next opening.

For obvious reasons I didn't inquire about their maternity leave policies. They haven't made an offer. but if they do........

-I already know I won't qualify for FMLA. I'm hoping they would give me 6 weeks (burn through sick/personal time and unpaid the rest.) I'm sure I won't qualify for sick bank since it's a pre-existing condition. I guess I wouldn't be entitled to the position being held for me, but I can't imagine it would be worth it for them to rehire.

It's also important to mention that covering me will be hard for them to manage during 6 weeks.

here are my q's

1) How do I tell them? HR wasn't at the panel interview, I'm not sure who will contact me about the offer if I get one (HR or someone from the panel-i.e. the supervisor).

2) Any tips on how to negotiate for more leave? I'd like a total of 12 weeks unpaid if I can get it.

  • ummm, that's sort of asking a lot.  put yourself in their shoes.  but for you and your family's sake i hope you get it.  you could just not say anything and then when your water breaks tell them then.  pretend that you are one of those women from that show where none of them knew they were pregnant.

  • I think this is a bit unethical.

You should've been upfront with them.

I'd be beyond ticked if I found out my new hire was almost 6 months pregnant but didn't feel the need to tell me especially when you're saying it's going to put them in a bind while you're out.

  • I started a job at 21 weeks.  Told them on my 3rd day of employment.  I found out about mat. leave through the employee handbook before I said anything.  They took it just fine.

Wow, I think you're being a little unfair to the OP.  It's her business whether or not she tells.  And they can't discriminate based upon pregnancy anyway, so who cares?

  • Designs you have no idea about my specific situation. I'm currently working in a dangerous setting with violent clients. i've had to hold a chair up to my belly to protect myself when i was trapped in a room. I've gone to supervisors about these issues and currently have my union rep involved and nothing's changed significantly.

I've tried to get out of the job 2 times and am contractually obligated for my specific setting for at LEAST another year, and that's IF I can get a transfer. If I break contract and resign altogether, my state liscence will be pulled.

I found a loophole to that clause and i'm pursuing it through this option, my only other option besides leaving the very narrow field I'm qualified for.

Does the future employer have anything to do with my current situation? No.

However, perhaps you missed the part where I mentioned I've waited 3 years for this position.  I had to wait for 1 of the 8 service providers to either move away or retire.

Respectfully, I didn't ask whether you thought it was ethical or not.I'm looking for tips for negotiation.
