Give me some reasons to NOT do this...other than that it may be painful and it may not work. I mean, is there some big negative to this that I'm forgetting??
Not that I know of. If you are not dialated at all yet or effaced...I dont think it would work. It is not painful in my opinion...just uncomfortable. With DS I was 39w 6d and 3 cm and labor started 15 hours later. With DD I was 40w and 4 cm. I actually thinkn I was in early labor but active labor started about 4-5 hours later.
GL to you!

Just know it won't work if your body isn't ready. I was against this until I started researching it. Membrane rupture has a small risk, along with: cramping, bleeding, contractions (not labor) and let down if it doesn't work. IMO, I would do it one week before induction would have to happen. For me, that's 41w, so 40w is when I'd request they be stripped. For most moms, it's 42w, so after 41w.
Even though the risk is very small I would still be worried about PROM. They would have been strongly recommending induction at 42w, so I would have done it at 41w if I had made it that far with DD.
I was never told of any really negative side effects.
like the other posters said, if your body is ready it will/may do something. If it's not, nothing will happen. And don't think that just because you are dilated that it will work either.
With DS I started having them stripped at my 40w appt. when I was already 3cm, no go, 41w at 4cm, no go and 42w at 4cm. The last one brought on enough small contractions (I couldn't feel them) on the monitors that my OB was able to send me over for an induction since I was "in labor" (my fluid levels had dropped at that appt. but the hospital didn't have an induction spot open for another 4 days, so we really needed to "get me into labor").
However, with DD2, I was stripped at 40w3d at 2cm and was in labor in less than an hour later. So it really is just up to your body, keep that in mind.
I don't think there are any negatives in my opinion. It will work if you are ready. but it won't if you are not. I had mine stripped at 39w and was in labor about 20 hours later.

Re: Okay, debating having my membranes stripped....
My fear, though I understand it's a small risk, was PROM. I was GBS+ though, and really wanted to avoid that.
I would do it at 41 weeks, but not before.

It's painful and it might not have any impact at all.
Do you really need any more reasons?
