C-sections

Longer for milk to come after RCS

I am almost certain I'm going to have a RCS.  I really want to bf LO and want to start asap after the c-section.  A co-worker told me if you have a rcs or scheduled cs it takes longer for your milk to come.  Anyone have experience with this?  As I was typing I noticed the BF board, so I am also going to look on there. TIA

O ya, I did bf my DD, but had infections and had to stop after a few weeks.  I would love to bf this one as long as I can.

Re: Longer for milk to come after RCS

  • My milk came in 2 days after my repeat c. It was actually sooner than my first one (which I labored before). The contractions of the uterus help your milk come in. You uterus contracts once the placenta is out. C-section does not affect breastfeeding for this reason. People will tell you lots of stupid *** about c-sections. Trust your doctor. Ignore the haters :)

  • It was so much easier to start breastfeeding this time around.  My milk came in on the third day.  My nipples didn't even become sore.  I had a lot of milk with my son and breastfed for 14 months, though.

  • My friend's milk came in just a few days after her c/s as well, so I wouldn't worry.

My situation is a little different. I didn't make milk at all with DD1 even though I attempted to only bf for almost 4 days straight. My mom also made no milk with me and my gma had some issues with a few of her children.

With DD2 (which was my c/s baby) I actually did make some milk but it was almost 2 weeks pp. My breasts never changed until that point. I tried some pumping but I never got enough going and hadn't planned on bf'ding at all because of the issues after DD1. This time around may surprise me though!

  • Same no problem w bf.
  • I call bull on that too. My milk came in a day earlier with ds2 then ds1.

  • That's crap. How you birth your baby doesn't have an impact on when your milk comes in. It's the placenta and hormonal shift that signals for the milk to come in. I had both of my boys on Mondays and by Wednesday my milk was in.

  • Not true. My milk came in while I was still in the hospital this time around. With my oldest I was home for a few days before it came in. The RCS should have no impact.

  • I went into labor with #1 and my milk didn't come in until day 5.  With #2, it came in on day 2. With #3, it came in on day 3, but my recovery was a little rougher and I didn't have a good supply for a week.  DS did just fine on what I had, though, he just nursed a lot.

  • My OB told me that the method of birth has nothing to do with milk production. What they said was that a hormone released when the placenta separates is what triggers milk production. That said, I had no difference between first CS and RCS (about 4 days).

  • Nope. Just the opposite. With DD#1, my milk came in on day 4. With DD#2, on day 3. With DS, on day 2.5.......I'm thinking this time I'll give birth and my milk will be in! LOL!

  • My milk came in much quicker with DD#2 (c-section) than with DD#1 (vaginal delivery).

  • Thanks ladies! I wasn't quite believing her, but I thought, who better to ask than someone who has had a rcs.
