Preemies

Introduction

Hi I've been checking posts on and off here for the past week and I figured I'd finally introduce myself.

My name is Jessica and almost 2 weeks ago I gave birth to my daughter Anastasia at 31 weeks 3 days.  I was diagnosed with HELLP syndrome after being in the hospital for high blood pressure for 5 days.

So far Ana is doing okay.  Within 1 week of being in NICU she was taken off oxygen and off her 2 IVs.  Yesterday she had her first bottle and today she took 2!

She started at 4lb 5 oz, and today she weighed 4 lb 9oz!  So proud of my little girl!!!!

I do have a question, if someone will be able to answer it, Ana has these breathing episodes when she just stops breathing, lately she has been getting herself out of it without any assistance from me or a nurse.  How long do these usually last?  I'm assuming about 3 more weeks, but if anyone has an answer  my husband and I would appreciate it.

  • Welcome and congratulations on the birth of your daughter! What a fantastic birth weight for 31 weeks! I can't remember the answer to your question about when apneas typically stop happening because my LO didn't really have a problem with apnea (just bradycardia and desatting)... hopefully someone else can chime in. They gave our son a tiny amount of caffeine because caffeine helps prevent apnea in preemies.

  • Congrats on your little girl. My second daughter was born at 34 weeks 5days and mainly had issues with forgetting to breath. Doctor thought she out grow them by her due date. She finally figured it out at 37 weeks. Hang in there Mama. Please keep us posted.

  • My little baby-girls were born @ 32 weeks and were having brady issues for about 2 weeks.  Once they were 5 days free, we brought them home!  And wow! Great weight for a 31 weeker.

    Congratulations on your baby-girl!

  • Hello, welcome, and congratulations! I'm sorry to hear she's having A's, B's, or both - that's very common for preemies and as PP's have pointed out they generally grow out of them quickly. I don't want to be the downer, but I wish someone had told me this when I was in your shoes (DS was a feeder and grower but with brady issues during our NICU stay). Some babies need longer than others to grow out of episodes so don't be surprised if that happens. They're scary, but not actually as scary as they seem. DS was 'ready' to come home at the end of his first month (born at 30.6) but had to stay in for another month due to A/B. Finally they sent us home on an apnea monitor which he was on for four months. There is another mom on these boards with a very similar story to mine so maybe she'll pop in, too. This isn't typically the case but wish I'd had someone gently tell me that was a possibility instead of always saying "he just needs to get bigger"/"any day now".
  • The NICU has stated to my husband and I that she will not be able to come home unless she has a week without any episodes....I know that is going to be the challenge for her.  The past 2 days I have really not wanted to leave the hospital.

Thank you all for your input, I really appreciate it.  We were so unprepared for her early arrival!

  • We had to go a week without any episodes too, and it SUCKED.  DS was doing awesome, taking all his feeds well, needed no more breathing support, no isssues.  Then out of the blue he had an aepnic episode that required stimulation. It automatically bought him an extra week when he probably would have been released within a day or two otherwise.  It was so frustrating.  However, we were scared that he might do it again so we were a teeny tiny bit glad we had to wait it out to make sure.  It stinks that this is one of those things that you can't do anything about to help.  I hope she doesn't have any more!!!  Hang in there.

  • Well she was doing great today and then I went in for her 8pm feeding...she bradyed when I breastfed her and then 2 other times with the bottle.  1 time she did not want to come out of it...so scary for me.....I'm hoping she will be released before mother's day but who knows at this point...:(
