Hello,
I am having some pretty strong pains and it is right in the area where I have fibroids on my uterus. It is very painful. I spoke to my doctor and he said it is pretty common but that if I start to feel contractions to go to the ER right away. I am 20 weeks.
Anyone else have this type of pain? Any advice on how to know if it is just pain or actual contractions?
Thanks for any help - this is my first pregnancy and I am scared and really uncomfortable...
Re: Fibroid Pain? Pls come in!
As a matter for fact, I was told to come in to L&D this morning because I was having contractions three minutes apart. Apparently, the largest (4 cm) of the three fibroids that have been discovered during my ultrasounds is quite angry now that my uterus is getting larger. Even though my contractions involved strong pain on my fibroid, it was easy to tell that they were contractions because my stomach would get hard and tight and the fibroid would turn into a golf ball. Then, after about a minute, my stomach would relax and the fibroid would flatten back out.
They put a monitor on my stomach to make sure LO was OK and gave me a shot of something (can't remember the name of the drug; it started with a "T") to stop the contractions. After it was clear that that didn't work, they gave me a pill to accomplish the same goal. Meanwhile, they did a vaginal exam to see if my cervix was dilating; thankfully, it was still closed.
After two hours total the contractions had stopped and they released me, with instructions to come back if my water broke; if I had severe, consistent pain; or if I had bleeding.
It just so happened that I was scheduled to see my doctor for my monthly appointment less than an hour after I got out, so she was able to weigh in on things as well. Basically, for some people, the hormone combo that comes with pregnancy causes no response from fibroids; for others, they shrink, and for us lucky ones they go berserk?there's no predicting which category a woman with fibroids will fall into.
So now my doctor will monitor my fibroid for the rest of my pregnancy and she wants me to have another US in a couple of weeks. In the meantime I'm to take Tylenol if the pain from the fibroid itself is a nuisance and I'm to take the rest of this week off and just take it easy (i.e., no heavy lifting, no long car rides, nothing "crazy").
I had had similar, smaller-scale symptoms (contractions 5 minutes apart, but the large fibroid wouldn't be discovered until my US the following week) about three weeks ago. That time they didn't have me come in; only had me drink a lot of water, lie on my left side, take some Tylenol, and agree to come in the next morning if the contractions were still there (they weren't).
I hope you're able to get some relief for your pain.
