Any NYC MoMs here?

I am thinking about going to visit a friend in Brooklyn in December w/the girls.  I'd have someone w/me to help (she's in a 4th floor walkup!), but I was wondering how on earth you get around with two babies in NYC?

I know we'll want to go into Manhattan - Is it safe to take a cab?  Do you just hold the baby(ies)?  What about the subway?  I know I've seen parents bringing strollers up and down the steps to the subway, but can't recall ever seeing twin infants / strollers on the subway.

I lived in NYC for 2 yrs, so I'm pretty familiar with the area and want to give it a try.  I have wonderful thoughts of visiting Rockefeller Center to see the tree, the decorated windows at Macy's, etc but realize the potential for aggravation and disaster too!  Thoughts?

Re: Any NYC MoMs here?

  • So far I only have one -- soon to be three -- but I can offer some advice on schlepping a kid around NYC. First, stick to one walkable area. Park your car nearby and just walk around with the kids in the stroller - much easier than public transportation. For instance, if you want to do Rockefeller Center, etc. you can park near there and walk around to see the tree, do 5th Avenue and walk to Macy's (it's only 16 blocks). Sometimes we'll drive in and park downtown to wander around SoHo then get back in the car and drive uptown to go to a specific restaurant or to see friends. Much easier in your own car. And  truthfully, taking taxis back and forth can cost just as much as parking in a lot for the day. I haven't taken my son in a taxi since he was still in an infant car seat and I could strap that down. I think it's technically legal to ride in a taxi with a kid on your lap, but it's not safe.

If you are afraid/nervous of driving in NYC, I would stick to the bus instead of the subway. While some subway stations do have elevators (you have to look for the handicap accessible ones), they don't all necessarily have that. But the buses will stop and let you get on via the wheelchair access, which is much easier.

     Hope this helps!

  • Who'd have thought driving would be easiest!?  It didn't even occur to me.  I did drive some when I lived there (only had a car there occasionally), but it's been awhile.  I'll need to think some on this....

  • We always drive in or have a car take us in depending on how many different stops we want to make.  There's a perfect garage on 5th by Bergdorf's which is also close to FAO Schwartz.  I would never take a taxi or public transportation with the babies.  We take the boys in all the time & it's never too difficult.  We bring our Bumbleride so neither of us get tired of pushing, plus it's much easier to jump curbs:)

Don't forget to check out Sak's window display....it's the best!!

  • Thanks!!

I'm still in denial that we don't live in the city anymore, so we are there all the time. Driving is the sanest way to go. Have fun!
