C-sections

Plus sized mamas please come in...

So I have a scheduled c-section tomorrow and I'm freaking out.  I've been lurking on here for reassurance and mostly feel better about it since I had my heart set on a vaginal delivery.

Anyway, when I saw my doctor the other day I asked if he was doing staples and he said no and that he was using dissolvable stitches and perhaps glue?  I got stuck on the no staples part.  Someone told me that it's better to use staples on overweight women.  Those who are plus-sized, did you have issues with your incision if you didn't have staples?  I have horrible images of my incision coming open or something equally horrible.  Please tell me I'm over thinking this.  I trust my doctor knows what he's talking about, but the idea of surgery in general has me so nervous.

  • No issues with either of my incisions.

ETA:1 incisions, but 2 c/s and didn't have issues with either c/s recovery.

  • I am plus-sized. I had staples but they removed them before I left the hospital and my incision did open up. But it had nothing to do with the closure of the wound. I had a hematoma and fluid behind the incision forcing it open in a spot about 2 inches long. Just take good care of the incision; keep it clean, dry and place a pad on it as PP mentioned. Good luck!

  • I've had 2 c/s...one with staples, one with dermabond (glue) and I much prefered the dermabond! As pp suggested, keep a pad or adry washcloth over the incision for the first few weeks to help it stay dry. I kept a pad over mine for the full 6 weeks but that may have been overkill because it looked to be pretty well healed well before then. Good luck tomorrow. My scheduled c/s was a great experience!

  • I'm large (a size 22 after pregnancy) and I had internal stitches and dermabond.  My incision healed up nicely and I have a small scar.  No issues with the incision.  I do have a "flap" of skin now that hangs over the scar a little (I think it's gross, but apparently very normal even for smaller people) and it does get a little sweaty there at times.  Keeping it dry while it heals will be very important - make sure to pat it well after showers.

  • No issues at all. I had steri strips, but felt the same as you do with those

  • I hope it went well. I had thr glue and had no problems at all. The key is keeping it dry. For the first couple days i had one of the hospital jumbo pads on it. Then once i got home i always kept a washcloth on it for almost 2 weeks pp just to make sure it states clean and dry. I had a summer baby in TX so i was concerned about sweat. I literally have no scar now.

  • I am a bigger girl (size 16 pre pregnancy) and just had C/S #1. I was put back together with steri strips and have had no problems. A life saver for me was both the binder my doctor ordered for me and using a regular old period pad over my incision (the cheap kind with no adhesive on the back side). It not only protected the incision from friction, it would wick away any moisture from sweat. I am so thankful to the post partum nurse that showed me this trick. Just keep it try and take is easy as to not cause the incision to open up. We bigger girls don't have to worry post c-section!
