Natural Birth

Water birth

Hi all,

I am 28 weeks and the hospital I will be delivering at offers water birth.  I was wondering if anyone has done this and the pros and cons of it.  I will be discussing this with my Dr at my next appt.  Thanks!

Re: Water birth

  • Hi.  I'm a first time mom too and asked this a little bit ago.  Here is the link to the post.  I'm really wanting to use a birth pool and this helped me.  Plus, I watched the documentary "The Business of Being Born" and felt very empowered.  A number of those births are in the water.  Good luck!

  • FTM as well, and were having a natural water birth in a birth center. I knew I wanted a water birth before I got pregnant because of how soothing I find water. I also like that DH can just get in the tub with me. haha.

Our doula told us that one of her favorite things about a water birth is that the baby isn't suddenly shocked by the cold air when he comes out. Instead, he's born into warm water thats only slightly cooler than he's used to, and mom's body temp is raised so skin to skin is more comfortable as well. I thought that was pretty cool.

Good luck! Our hospital had labor tubs but wouldn't allow a water birth, which is why we switched to the birth center. Your hospital sounds awesome!

  • other benefits include reduced chance of tearing perenium because the water softens it up so it stretches nicely. I am also planning water birth in hospital setting since there are no birthing centers in my state

also be sure to read "birth without violence" the cornerstone/foundation of the water birth principle
