3rd Trimester

Intense Horrible Cramps

So I woke up this morning with menstral type cramping...occasional contraction. (I have gotten lots of braxton hicks for the past two months). I had my dr. appt and had my membranes swept and since then I have had INTENSE cramping......horribel horrible period like cramps....but way worse pain. I have had some contractions as well but the constant pain of the cramping over powers the contractions. Could this be labor?

Re: Intense Horrible Cramps

  • This is what I've heard labor feels like. Time the contractions - if you have a smartphone look up the app contraction counter or contraction timer, keep count & call your doc.

You're 37 weeks, which according to my prepared childbirth class is full term. Best wishes!!

  • Um, why did they strip your membranes at 37 weeks?  Just curious.

In my experience, I didn't have "cramps" just contractions.  When it got painful, I wouldn't describe them as period cramps.  It was more a total body kind of thing where I had to stop whatever I was doing and breath.  Hope that helps.

Um because my doctor and I discussed it and decided together that was the thing to do.

Not to be snarky but that questions sounded a little judgemental to me.

Sorry, that's not how it was intended.  I have not ever heard of a doctor stripping membranes that early.  DS was "early" full term at 37 1/2 weeks and had some latching issues as well as jaundice.   This was after 3 weeks of bed rest.  As a 2nd time mom I am hoping that this LO stays in as long as possible.  Thats allBig Smile.

I'm sorry. I guess I am just a little on edge cause I am really hurting right now and can't figure out if I should stay at work, go home...or what. Didn't mean to jump you on that. :)

  • My contractions always felt like horrible pms cramps that would come and go and I could time them.  I think you may be in labor if they are timeable.

  • I agree- mine were like period cramps- but VERY strong and VERY intense.. bring tears to your eyes immediately intense... start timing.. and then give them a call.

    Good luck!

Oh, Momma.  No worries, I complete understand.

If you are in pain, I would go get checked.  What's the worst they could do, send you home?

And I am NOT telling you what to do, but if it were me...I'd go home and put your feet up for a bit.  You may want to work til the very end which is fine.  I personally hope to have a little R and R between leaving work and the baby coming.  I'm sure we will all need it.  Good luck.  Everything will be great.

  • Yes, agreed.  BH tend to be more of a tightening sensation.  When I had the tightening with the cramping, I considered that more of a contraction.  However, I also have contractions where it is more cramping and not so much of the tightening.  I can tell when they are real contractions though because they kind of make me have to stop and think to breathe through them and I get that wierd, sweaty feeling like when I am in pain.  It comes on, peaks, then goes away.  Definitely start timing them.  How far apart they are and how long each episode lasts.  "They" say that if they are 3-5 min apart, lasting 1 min each for an hour than head into L&D.  If they are as painful as you are describing though, you might want to at least give a call to your nurses line and ask their opinion.  Very well could just be a side effect of membrane stripping, but could also be you in labor.
