Can your LOs point to their nose, etc?

In the airport yesterday, a lady was talking to DD and when I told her she was 11 months, she started saying, "Where's your nose?  Show me your nose!" and seemed surprised when I told her she couldn't do that yet.

Can your LOs do that?  Is it something that you taught them, or did they just pick it up?  Evie doesn't really seem to understand much when I talk to her.  We sing "Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes" some days, but she doesn't really get it yet.  Am I supposed to be working on body parts already?  When do kids typically start to get that?

  • Nope, she can't...but she sure can stick her fingers up our noses!

  • He just started pointing a few weeks ago and no, he is not identifying body parts.  I have started showing him but I think it may be a little while :)

  • Oh goodness, no!  I have no idea when kids start learning body parts, but Macy is definitely not there yet.

  • Oh heck no.  LO can hardly point.  The lady in the airport was crazy!

  • The lady probably just doesn't really remember WHEN her kids and/or grandkids started doing it, and just thought she had the "age" right. Mila points all the time, and with certain things, if you ask her where it is (mostly people and favorite toys/things), she'll point to them, then crawl or scoot over to them. But she'll only do it, usually, if the person/thing is already within her view. Unless it's her picture of Daddy or her Marie Kitty... she'll crawl anywhere for those, and always seems to know/remember where they are. I don't think Creedyn really got the hang of body parts until close to 18 months. (Saying and pointing.)

  • DD can point to my nose, if I say "where is mommy's nose?".  I've been pointing out all the parts of the face though a lot in the last few weeks.  The nose is the only one she seems to know right now.   I don't think she would point to her own nose, though.

  • Heck no!  Not even close I don't think.  He points, or at least I think he's pointing - I don't always know at what - but if I say "where's the ball?" or whatever, he has no clue yet.

  • I hate it when other people who know nothing about what a baby can('t) do/should(n't) do make you feel like your baby is behind!

No, I haven't even tried teaching that to her.

On the topic of what they should be doing...we were at a first bday part weekend.  The birthday girl was walking around.  Audrey, who just turned 10 months, is crawling and standing.  Although she has taken steps, and can walk holding my hand, she does not actually walk solo.  Honestly, I don't think she really cares to.  She's a master crawler and gets around super fast.  Anyway...they kept telling me "don't worry, she'll walk when she's ready."  I was just thought um, she's only ten months.  Don't worry, I'm really not concerned.

This. FIL recently asked us if we were going to start potty training soon. And he has 3 kids. I think people forget even if they've had kiddos. And no, she doesn't know any body parts.

  • Nope no way Ev could point to anything if I asked him to. It wasn't even on my radar to start trying to teach him that!

  • Um, no.  I saw the title of this post and my first thought was... Oh Lord?  Are we behind?  Is he supposed to be doing this?

Ha, Evie does this too!  She will also perform a dental exam if you are interested.

Thanks, ladies!  I should know better than to listen to crazy ladies in the airport!

We do get the oral exam as well.  I think she's reaching for our tonsils.

  • She definitely can't point to her nose. She just started pointing at things recently.

This exactly, and I think he gets mouth as well. But he doesn't point, he grabs. I am not really sure if  he understands that that is my nose, or if he just knows what is expected when I say those words, because he doesn't do it to anyone else, even himself, and it only happens during feedings.

I think we have all learned since our BFP's that most people have no clue about anything!

Isaac gave me a bloody nose the other day! I was holding him and reached up and scratched the inside of my nose. DH walked in from the backyard and I was standing there in shock, holding Isaac is one arm and holding my bloody nose in the other.

And no, he can't point out his nose. My friend was asking her baby to point at her nose the other day and I was like, huh, maybe I'm supposed to be teaching that now. So I've starting pointing out his nose and ears and such. But no, he's not doing that yet.

this was my thought too. Then I see all the replies and considered not opening bc I was afraid they would all say "yes for a month now" or something and then I would be worried LO was behind. He just started pointing a few weeks ago.
  • DS can show you where his toes are but that's it and that just started yesterday. I sing him a really silly song that i made up, toes and nose are both in the song but he only recognizes his toes so far. ETA~ DS does not point he just touches.

  • M knows his foot, toes, & tummy. But when I ask 'where's your nose?' he crawls to me to touch my nose. I don't think he has any idea how to touch his own nose yet though. I'll post a video to the FB group if you are on there...

  • Haha, no. I don't really point out body parts to her, though. I guess I should get on that Embarrassed I've been trying to get her to do "so big" for the past couple of weeks, but all she does is look at me and laugh.
