XP: Big Baby!

Had an u/s yesterday and tech said baby weigh 6lbs 4oz (give or take half a pound). They were right on with my daughter, so I imagine they are pretty close to accurate this time too. Baby looked chubbier on the screen than DD did. DD was 7lbs 13oz at 41 weeks! Now at 35 weeks this baby is "tipping the scale" at 6.4! The tech said I was still within normal range, but at the top of the scale! If baby gains the typical half a pound/week, I could end up with an 8 or 9 pound baby!

Re: XP: Big Baby!

  • My little guy was 6.4 at our growth ultrasound at 34 weeks. I've been expecting a big baby from the beginning - my mom had all big babies...I was almost 9, my younger brother was 10.14, and we were both a few weeks early. Even my older brother was 7 lbs - and he was 7 weeks premature!

Yikes! I was definitely not expecting a big baby, since DD was only 7lbs 13oz at 8 days overdue!

  • I think 8 or 9 pounds will still be okay!  what constitutes a big baby is, in many ways, relative (to me 8 or 9 pounds is small, but my brother was well over 12 pounds and I was 10 and a half pounds, and SIL was over 11, so I'm hoping for anything below 10 haha).  But I can imagine it was a shock if you were expecting a more average sized baby.

  • My DS#1 was 8lbs 12 oz and my DS#2 was 8 lbs. My OB said if I wanted to know the size I could get a growth u/s but otherwise everything looks good. I'm measuring normal. I decided not to get the u/s. I guess I am already expecting him to be at least 8 lbs and she won't let me go past my due date...which makes me feel so much better.

I didn't have any problems with such big babies. If yours is around the 8 lbs, don't worry. You will be fine. It just sounds scarier than it actually is.

My girlfriend recently had a baby who was 12 lbs. You are right, that does constitute a big baby! Were they natural births? Ouch!
