Tracking calories while BFing

Hey ladies!

I currently use My Fitness Pal to track my calories, and it's working really well. The problem I have is that you're supposed to subtract 500 calories a day if you're EBF, and I'm having a hard time hitting the total calorie amount without going over on fat, protein, etc.

Has anyone noticed a dip in supply if you don't hit your recommended # of calories (i.e. 1200 for weight loss, so 1700 if you're EBF)

Thanks for any insight! :)

  • I wouldn't be overly worried about going over on fat, proteins or carbs. As long as you are having a steady weight loss and still producing a good amount of breast milk, keep doing what you are doing. I find my body functions more efficiently with more protein than carbs recommended. I also get a decent amount of fat in my diet and usually end up going over. I eat a lot of nut butters and coconut oil which help me stay satisfied and keep my blood sugar in check.

  • I used the Lose It app on my iPhone while I was breastfeeding.  I exercise a lot (6 times a week, mostly running which I do 5 days a week) but I have a desk job so my overall calorie needs are pretty low.  I noticed that if I went above 1800 calories I actually started to gain weight while I was breastfeeding, so I tried to stick around 1500-1700.  I never had a dip or a problem with my supply and I exclusively breastfed (no solids, no formula, no rice cereal) for 6 months and breastfed for over a year (no supplementing, just starting solids).  I know that my calorie intake was lower than what I read was recommended for breastfeeding, but my body clearly did not need the extra calories.

This exactly...I lost all my baby weight in 10ish weeks with the help of this app and I was breastfeeding twins.  I went over my fat and protein allotment everyday.  You have to remember that not only are your calories being used to make BM, but your fat, protein, and carbs are as well.  As long as you don't see a difference in your supply and you are losing the weight at a slow, steady rate, you will be fine.
