We talk to her and sing. She likes her bouncy and swing for short periods of time. However, she is happiest when being entertained. What has been working for you?
My older DD was very chill and didn't seem to need/crave as much entertainment.
My LO is super high maintenance in the entertainment department.
Self entertainment: She will bounce in her bouncer thingy and take swings at the toys for a little while, maybe 15 minutes. She has a big crib mirror and she will stare at herself in it, also for maybe 15 minutes. <-- A caution with the crib mirror, when she sees the baby in the mirror flipping out crying, she cries even more dramatically.
Other: We also talk, sing, practice standing, and make funny faces. She likes to be carried around a lot and seems to like to look outside and look at paintings/pictures. We were in a waiting room lately with many brightly colored geometric paintings and she was very content staring at them. She also likes to be worn facing outward in the Moby and walk down busy sidewalks or through busy stores. Basically, she requires a huge amount of visual stimulation.
Reading bright coloured books, playing on the playmat, tummytime, and singing to him he really likes "How much is that doggy in the window"! Its pretty funny, he gets all happy and smiley when we start singing that one. Also we go for walks, and visit other moms and babies. Socialization is SO important even from such a young age. As a result, he is not shy at all, and will be happy with who ever is holding him.
Put him on his playmat, put him on a blanket on the floor for tummy time, put him on my legs and talk/sing/be silly with him, put him in his swing or bouncy chair, read books to him, play his baby music CDs. Now that he's going to daycare, I hope they are going to be entertaining him throughout the day, too. Can't wait until he's a little bigger so he can use his exersaucer and we can get or borrow a Johnny Jump-Up.
We do tummy time, back time, jumperoo time, bumbo time Walks in the stroller, reading books, singing and doing motions to songs (itsy bitsy spider, wheels on the bus, patty-cake, and this little piggy are recent favorites), he has a kick n play piano, playing airplane, and he loves just chatting it up with me while laying on my legs. I'm looking forward to summer - we got a little one-ring pool to play in! We also have a little mommy-baby exercise session. He's like my own personal set of weights
DD loves her play mat! She spends tons of time in there a day. She has started to hate her swing. We have a bumbo, however I have heard lots about how it's not great for them . So she is really only in it for a few minutes a day while I get something accomplished like folding laundry.
My DD loves music so we do a lot of sing-alongs. I'll turn on Pandora to the family stations (lullaby if we're trying to calm her, family folk if we want to be more energetic) and I'll sing the songs to her and dance with her. Her favorite song is The Lion Sleeps Tonight. She'll start headbobbing when it comes on! It's very cute.
She also loves this new game my DH started playing with her. He'll have her on his lap (in the boppy or propped up on his knees) facing him and in a sing-song voice go through all the parts of the face. He'll touch his nose saying "Daddy's nose" and then touch her nose saying "Tova's nose." Then "Daddy's mouth," "Tova's mouth," "Daddy's cheeks," "Tova's cheeks," etc. She thinks it is the most fascinating thing. She'll sit smiling while he does that for as long as he's willing to play... last night he did for a full 20 minutes!
As far as her entertaining herself, she'll play with her kick and play piano for awhile. She also likes to sit propped up (usually in her stroller) watching me play with the dog and she loves watching her mobile in her crib. But mainly she likes to sit in my lap or be strapped into the Ergo and just hang out with me. She's pretty easy-going.
Sometimes I feel like we don't have time to do anything! By the time we are home and settled, it's dinner time and then two hours later bed time. I feel like so much of her time is spent sleeping and eating in the evenings.
During the weekend we try and do singing (she loves Patty Cake!), reading, playmat time, Mamaroo while playing peekaboo, tummy time, walks, etc. She's pretty chill, but I like interacting with her.
My mom put 2 nursery rhyme Cds in her Easter basket with 50 songs on each..I prop DD up on the Boopy or put her in her bumbo and I sing and dance for about an hour lol...she cracks up the whole time and I get my excerise! We both win:)
