Around here Red Velvet just became the rage (Upstate/Western NY) and everyone has it on their menus, Wegmans sells it in their bakery and people are making all sorts of "red velvet" things for desserts. I don't see the appeal. It doesn't taste like anything to me. I get that it's a red colored cake with some cocoa in it but, it isn't chocolately.
Can someone who loves Red Velvet cake chime in and tell me what the appeal is? Is it just the cream cheese frosting? Where can I get a good one? Do I have to travel south for it?
Thanks for helping me understand this dessert conundrum
Re: NSAIF - Red Velvet cake...I don't get why everyone likes it so much
I used to feel the same as you , I couldn't stand it and didn't know what the big deal was. I made it once from a mix for my friend's birthday and it made me nauseous because it looked like murder in a bowl!
BUT then I found a M.artha Stewar.t recipe and made it from scratch. Oh man what a difference ! So yummy. There's only a quarter cup of cocoa in it so it really isn't a chocolate cake dyed red like some other velvets. The secret to this recipe is the buttermilk it makes the cake so rich and "vevlety" ( hence the name) in your mouth!
I bake on the side and this receipe is one of my most popular!
Meli - I love to bake, maybe I'll give the Martha recipe a try when I need a dessert for something.
I'm glad I'm not the only one that doesn't get the hype.
One word: FROSTING! hahaha, that is the only reason I ever liked this cake...
Definitely try it ! I bet it changes your whole outlook on Red Velvet , it's that good!
Isn't this the only reason to like any kind of cake? :-)

I was just going to type the exact same thing! I love red velvet cake but I don't like any of the recipes I've tried for it. I just stick to ordering it at restaurants.
