s/o bedding sets

I'm always torn about buying a full bedding set for a crib.  We never used DS' bumpers and only used the blanket outside the crib.  But, I really liked having a dust ruffle that matched his sheets and decor.

If I buy a bedding set again, I'm planning to hang the blanket on the wall, but I still have no use for the bumpers.

Is there another route I can take?  Buy a dust ruffle and sheets somewhere else?  I'm not crafty enough to make my own...neither is my mom.

What is everyone else doing?

Re: s/o bedding sets

  • For this baby I'm going to get a fitted sheet and crib skirt rather than a full bedding set.  I have my eye on some sheets at PBK but I'll check Etsy out too.  It will be a lot cheaper than getting a full set of things that I won't use (bumpers) and don't need (comforter).

  • I guess it depends on where you buy it.  We bought the Dr Seuss bedding for this time around and got just the sheet, dust ruffle and blanket.

  • Etsy! You can select which pieces you want to purchase!!!!

Also, some retailers are starting to offer bumperless bedding sets (Caden Lane is one, for example). There are fewer, but they do exist.

  • My SIL is expecting her 2nd and just ordered their bedding from Carousel Designs and bought just the crib sheet, the skirt, and the blanket, since they didn't want to waste any money on a crib bumper they wouldn't use. They designed it to go around their nursery theme, and it's actually really nice.

This is where we got DD's. We ordered sans the bumper (still got the comforter because we wanted it) and received the bumper anyway. They are SO plush that we actually made the ends into pillows and used the rest of the fabric for some room decorations.

But the quality is great and I do highly recommend them.

I must be looking at the wrong ones then, because all the ones I found had bumpers.  And we bought DS' from Target and I couldn't get it without the bumper.  Hmm..

  • I'm planning to have mine made...but I'm also probably going to get the bumper because it's so cute and I think you can use it before they're sleeping in the crib and after they get a little older.

  • I'm registering for individual pieces at Land of Nod, which is similar to PBK in quality and price.  It's more costly than some options, but still seems less expensive to me than buying a set.  I'm registering for crib sheets ($24), bedskirt ($49), changing pad cover ($29) and curtains ($29.)  Other than that, I'm only registering at BRU.  I think these prices are appropriate for possible shower gifts though, and if people prefer not to get bedding as a gift, it's still comparable to what a set would cost me, but I know I'll use all of the pieces.
  • there are not too many bumper less sets out there. Mayasri.com makes some cute prints.
