Question after f/u appt

Hi ladies,

Had my f/u appt yesterday after my natural miscarriage last Saturday. Ultrasound confirmed again (ER did as well) that it was complete and natural. Doc said didn't need anymore labs done and that I should ovulate in 2-4 weeks and period in 4-6 weeks. He said we can try after that at any time we are ready, but I am ready now!

I should have asked him this, but I was just trying not to cry, does anyone know why you can't try right after and have to wait the one cycle? I was glad we can try after that, but I was so emotional that I forgot to ask. The closer was good, but also just a reminder that it was real and our baby is gone.

I'd call and ask your doctor why he wants you to wait. The thing is there are a million different reasons why one particular doctor might think you should wait and they might be completely different from what another doctor thinks.

My OB recommends waiting 3 cycles. She says it gives your body time to heal, lets the uterine lining get strong and healthy again. She strongly suggests waiting 3 cycles no matter if the miscarriage was natural, medicated, or a D&C.

My RE says wait 1 cycle. He has similar thinking as my OB...gives your uterus time to heal as a precaution.

There is some evidence that you have a slightly higher chance of another miscarriage if you don't wait long enough. But everyone has a different idea of how long is long enough which is why you need to talk to your doctor.

I personally would never try immediately after a loss. I've had enough losses to know just how crazy a cycle can be immediately after a loss that I feel like I can just "see" the risks in it.

Plus, if you got pregnant right away and had your betas checked they might start out unusually high and then drop...you might be told you are having another miscarriage when in fact it was just the remaining HCG from your first miscarriage that is still dropping. It could just cause unneccessary stress.

Honestly, if your doctor says wait one cycle then I'd wait one cycle. If you really don't agree or don't want to then call and ask for details and then make your decision from there.

Most doctors recommend waiting one cycle for dating purposes. It's much easier for all to date the pregnancy if you're clear on when you ovulated and conceived. Getting back on track and knowing when you ovulate for the first time after a miscarriage typically is easier to tell after you've had a first period.

I have not read that there are any studies that show an increased chance (even a small one) of a subsequent miscarriage if you try too soon. In fact, there was quite a large study out of Europe that showed that women who conceived within 6 months of a miscarriage had an 80%+ rate of carrying the pregnancy to term.

I think things you need to keep an eye on is your lining. Your lining may a little time to build back up and I know that after my miscarriages, it was a little less than normal. But if you're not monitoring that through ultrasounds, you're not going to know anyway so you might just have to risk it. But usually a thin lining impedes implantation so you just might not get pregnant in that cycle.

I have gotten pregnant twice right after a miscarriage and miscarried both times but I do not attribute that to trying too soon. I attribute it to something that is much more likely the reason -- such as my egg quality due to my age.
