Homemade baby food

I want to start making some of my own foods for my 6 month old.  What kinds of food did you make and/or combinations? If you have any suggestion, I would love to hear what you have to say! Thanks everyone!!Big Smile

  • Ive made sweet potatoes and carrots so far because they freeze well. We baked the potatoes but for the carrots I just washed, peeled and chopped them into chunks and steamed them in Ziploc steam bags (cooked in 5 min). Then I added a little water, mashed them and used my immersion blender to puree them. SO EASY! I made a week's worth of carrots in like 45 min and thats just cause it was the first time I'd tried.     This.  They have printouts of what foods to try for the ages.  I like to have that on our fridge and check them off as I go along.  With DD I would make side notes of whether she had a reaction or liked/disliked something in particular.

  • I also recommend the WholesomeBabyfood site. I use the Oxo covered ice cube tray and then dump them into ziploc bags in the freezer. As for combos I've basically just thrown random ice cubes together and heat them and she's liked everything so far.

    I also use these glass bowls to heat in the microwave; microwaving plastic skeeves me out.

    Yup, wholesomebabyfood.com is great.  And I do the same thing - just throw a couple of different ice cubes in the bowl to heat up for her dinner - I think peas and sweet potato is her favorite so far.  I make her purees thicker now, so I can get away with just fork-mashing a lot instead of putting it though the food processor, too. 

    I also make DD's oatmeal or yogurt for breakfast.  Her oatmeal usually has a cube of pumpkin, a couple of spoonfuls of baby oatmeal with formula, and some applesauce or bananas or whatever fresh fruit I have mashed up that day.  Her yogurt is just regular plain whole fat yogurt with some fruit and a little oatmeal to thicken it up.  

    I buy her applesauce - it's just regular unsweetened applesauce - and canned pupmkin, and she hates fresh bananas, but loved the babyfood bananas my mom gave her last week, so I buy her those now too.  We're going to try fresh bananas again this weekend when the ones I have in the house get overripe.  Now that she's loving the baby food ones, maybe she'll like fresh ones better.

  • Avacado is great for them and super easy.  Just mash them and add some water or breastmilk, freeze in ice cube trays, and put in ziplock bags for later.

     I also do the same with bananas.  You can add a little cereal if baby likes it that way too. 

     Squash is also a favorite of my baby girl.  Cut in half.  put in a pan skin up with about an inch of water.  Bake for about 50 minutes until skin puckers a little at 350.  Cool and turn over.  scrape out the meat and blend or puree in a food processer.  freeze in ice cube trays for later.

  • I make sweet potatoes, corn, carrots, peas, grean beans, bananas, and apples. We also tried avocado but he hated it!

    I make anything that's in season! Mostly veggies, and only a couple fruits (because they're sweeter).

    Squash, avacado and sweet potatoes were the first. Then onto spinach, ground turkey puree, and bison (with root veggies like turnips and carrots to smooth it out). Make as many different things as you can to get them trying all sorts of foods!

    My daughter loved sweet potatoes! Organic Rice cereal, apples and bananas are some other top choices. Check out that link and find the link for the food chart too. That will help you determine what age to feed what foods. This was one of my favorite times in my daughters life. So much fun. Hope you enjoy it!
