Trying to think of how to help a friend (help!)

A family friend's daughter has been dealing with her soon to be one-year old fighting cancer at St. Jude in Tennesse. She had to fly out, and hasn't been home since they went to the doctors for what was supposed to be a simple procedure and has ended up with a very sick boy.

I'm so unfamiliar with the area, and this is really a friend of a friend (I don't know her directly) so I don't know her directly enough to ask her what she needs. I was trying to think of something that I could give to help them (target gift card, dinner gift card, gift card for something).Basically, she went to the doctors office and hasn't been home since and is now in a different state. Does anyone know what is in the area around St. Jude that would be useful? He is in the housing that they provide now, so they are getting a break from the hospital. I just am hoping to help with a bit of the random expenses that they are probably having being so far away from home, whether it be food or clothing or toys or or books anything that they need. Would an Amazon giftcard be better? I just want to help, somehow.

  • I would think she probably doesn't have a lot of her sons stuff with her. Maybe send some clothes and toys for him and some books for him and mom to read together. For mom, maybe a goodie box with things she might use - snacks/candies, makeup wipes, chapstick (hospitals can be dry!), iTunes giftcard (if she would use it) to buy music or audio books to pass the time. Maybe a blank journal in case she wants to write down anything about her time there. If possible, a gift card to the hospital cafeteria would be great. Even if she is getting out, there will be days where she just wants to stay close by.

Sorry for your friends LO - I hope he gets through this quickly!

  • Maybe a visa gift card since it can be used anywhere for anything? I'm thinking the more "stuff" she has there the more she'll need to bring home at some point.

I think this is a great idea.  She can use it at the cafeteria or gift shop or if she goes out somewhere, plus since you don't know what she does or doesn't have, this would be a good option.

  • I used to work for a company that did the fundraising for St. Jude.  If you decide you'd like to do a dinner gift card, I can ask one of my old coworkers if he knows of a nice place.

  • I went ahead with a visa card, that way she can use it for whatever she needs.

    Thanks everyone!

  • What a generous gift!

Just a PSA about Visa gift cards.. I was given a few when I got married & when I had my baby. We held onto them until we 'needed them'. We were charged a fee the first time we used them and if you don't use them w/in a certain period (I think a year) they charge a monthly fee. :(

I doubt that will happen in this case, but for future purchases, I just wanted you to know.
