feeding in the carseat?

Do you feed your baby while they are in a car seat or strapped into something? I used to do this all the time with kids I watched, but now I'm rethinking it. DD has reflux and often chokes while eating, so I almost never feed her in her seat. I'm just curios where other people stand on this topic.

Re: feeding in the carseat?

  • If we have somewhere we need to be by a certain time, and if I have a bottle (which isn't usual  because I pump way less then she eats) I will feed her in the car seat. Scar doesn't have reflux, though, so I'm not sure I would if she did.

  • I've done it a couple times when we were out running errands and K starts flipping out in the back seat, I've pulled over and just fed him in his seat. He does spit up A LOT more though when I do that, so it's only in meltdown emergencies that I do it :)
  • I will feed her in the seat (or more commonly the bouncer), but not while driving.  I think you just meant in the seat, but that is one of my intentions as she gets older that we will not have hear eating while the car is moving.
  • With both girls I did/have fed in the carseat, while driving, on long trips.  If we are at home or even in town or something I would/will take them out all the time, but on long road trips (to the in-laws or vacation that is 7 or 8 hours away) I'll just hop in the back of the vehicle and feed on the go.  One of my friends can even breastfeed her kids on the go while they are in the carseat!  I haven't seen her do it, but to me that's pretty impressive!

  • I went to my aunt's house for her 40th wedding anniversary the weekend previous and on the way home, I fed LO while I sat in the back seat and my brother and DH were in the front.  LO doesn't have reflux so it wasn't a big issue.  I just wish I could have burped him, but I'm not taking him out of his seat until we are home or parked.

  • If I am with DD, we are nursing, so I've never done this. She doesn't spit up, but I'd still worry about the angle of her head/neck and ease of eating. Not to say I wouldn't do it in a meltdown situation, though!

  • My LO is very gassy and also chokes while feeding - whether on the breast or bottle - so I shudder to think how gassy she would be after a feed in a moving car or at that angle!
