POLL: Do you have a pediatrician yet?

I went on my hospital tour yesterday and received a "you better hurry up" by the nurse giving the tour about having a pediatrician. I'm just wondering how many of us have a pediatrician yet...

Re: POLL: Do you have a pediatrician yet?

  • I have older kids so yes, but when I was pg with DS I moved to my current state at 26 wks so I made an appt asap when I got here and met with one by 28 wks. Some are hard to get with, and some arent accepting new patients (like mine) so you need to look around then. The hardest thing was getting a good rec.  I recommend an interview, if they dont want to interview you and you interview them, move on. You need to find someone who fits with your style.

  • The pediatrician I had when I was a child is one of the top ones in the state, and I believe at one point was in high demand and not taking new patients (not sure if that's true anymore). She is still in practice, and just happens to be located at the clinic at the hospital at which I am delivering, 2 miles from our house. Last week at our first session of Preparing for Childbirth, they told those of us who don't have a pediatrician we should get going on that ASAP. So I called the clinic and asked about the availability of my former pediatrician, and said that I was one of her former patients...and got a "meet and greet" session for my husband and I on the calendar for later this week.  So I'm pretty excited about that :)
  • I already have one but I also have an older DD.

When I was pregnant with her, I did not have a pediatrician until I delivered her.  They sent the pedi that was on call.  It worked out really well and I love the practice.  I also have numerous friends who go to the same practice.

  • I voted for still narrowing down our search but we are 99.9% sure we made our decision:)

  • We just realized a few weeks ago that we needed to make this happen.  I had no idea where to start.  But once again, our childbirth classes came through for us-they had a guest doctor speaking to us about a topic, and he was really great and nice and funny.  So I grabbed his card before he left and have a 'meet and greet' appointment with him tomorrow after our OBGYN appointment.  I can't imagine not going with him at this point-he also taught dh's New Fathers class and dh loved him-but I guess it's a formality.  I'm hoping he'll be great tomorrow and we'll be good to go!
  • I'm not going to answer the poll, because I already have one for DD, so that's cheating.

BUT...with DD, I showed up at the hospital and didn't have one.  They assigned the on-call ped and I really liked him, so I stayed with one of his partners - even though it was 30 minutes from our house.

  • I said we've had one for a while, but it hasn't been all but 2 weeks since we've picked one. It's just we're not still searching, so I didn't know which one to choose. :)

  • We've had one since 2010, but I have a daughter already.  We LOVE our pedi. :)

  • We know who we will be using but we haven't filled out the paperwork yet. My husband may be changing jobs so we wanted to wait until we were sure about who our insurance will be through before we sign the paperwork.

  • I didn't answer the poll because we're not going to have a pediatrician. We chose to have my family doctor (who I have seen since I was a baby) take on the baby. I called about 4 weeks ago to confirm that he would take the baby as a patient (he hasn't taken new patients for as long as I can remember). They said he is always willing to take a new baby of an existing patient and gave me some instructions (fill out all hospital paperwork for myself and the baby with my doctor as the family doctor and call the day after birth because he will want to see the baby within the first week). I was glad to cross that one off my list!

  • We have a meet-and-greet session scheduled with a pedi that a friend of mine recommended. I am really excited b/c she loves him.

I definitely recommend visiting the pedi in his/her office before making up your mind about him. We had a previous pedi interview with a DO in a pediatric practice I had found in the phone book, and it was horrifying. Although the office was in one of the most expensive places in town, the waiting room consisted of about 20 straight-backed dining room chairs, a Victorian style sofa, and a TV hung way up high on the wall. The seats weren't comfy for adults, much less kids. When we got into the exam room to meet the doctor, the floor was filthy and the one toy (you know the wood and wire thing with beads that is like a pre-req in all dr's offices?) looked like it had been sitting outside in the rain and then stored in a barn for 6 years. Blech! The sad thing is that the doctor was pretty nice and I probably would have gotten along with her fine if her whole office hadn't wreaked of total lack of concern for patient comfort and cleanliness.

I have to second this! I had setup an appointment for a meet and greet and because of work I needed to reschedule the day before. I tried calling 6 times over two days and couldn't get through once! They didn't even have an answering machine or anyone to pick up and put me on hold.

The doc came highly recommended but the staff/office were "so-so". After not getting through I decided I didn't want him, especially if I had an emergency with LO.
