Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Question about Blighted Ovum

I spent the past 4 days coming to terms with my blighted ovum diagnosis. I know it was nothing I did. I spent two days in bed just crying and going through the whole grieving process. I made the decision to do it naturally so now I just wait. But that's not my question actually just felt like venting.

My question is(well a little back story, then my question): I had three ultrasound. My first one was at my 8 week appointment where my doctor told me she couldn't see anything. I then went down to radiology two days after and had an ultrasound and the third one was done by radiology again a week later. I never saw any of the pictures from the ultrasound. If you've been diagnosed with BO has your doctor sat down and explained the ultrasounds to you and showed you there was no growth? I was just thinking about it and thought is was odd that my doctor didn't show me anything. I also think that I will be changing doctor's because she just never really cared to ask me about my personal life or habits when meeting. That just doesn't sit to well with me.

Re: Question about Blighted Ovum

  • I'm sorry for your loss.

Could you see the screen during the u/s?  Every u/s I've ever had I looked at the screen while the u/s was being conducted.

Either way, if you have any doubt ask to see the pictures.  This is your body, your file, etc.  You have every right to see them.  And if you want another u/s to make sure, you have that right as well.  After our baby was found to have no HB at a routine appt, DH & I went back together b/c he wanted to see with his own eyes that no HB existed anymore.  The Dr was totally open to that & did the u/s right in our room & showed him where the HB would be so that he had 100% peace of mind that our baby had died.

  • I had a blighted ovum and my doctor did not really go over the ultrasound with me. She explained while doing the ultrasound that there was a sack but she no evidence of a fetal pole. She mentioned that the gestational sac looked to be degrading. But she was not really pointing anything out specifically on the screen. I never asked to see the images or have them explained more, though I guess I could have. I think she was trying to be tactful? Maybe?

  • I'm so sorry for your loss. My OB in Germany let me watch while he was doing both u/s (at 5w5d and at 7w). When I started miscarrying my blighted ovum today in the US, my GP here told me to go the ER since I don't have an OB here in the States. The u/s tech there at first didn't have the screen pointed at me, but I asked her if I could see, too, and she was happy to turn it so I could also see.

If you want to see the pictures, then I think you should ask your OB. If he/she agrees - great, and maybe it will give you some closure. If he/she doesn't agree, I would consider getting another OB if there's not an excellent reason (I can't think of one off-hand). It's your body, your baby, your medical records, and you have every right to see them. Does your OB have any sort of patients' rights sheet? In the ER this morning I asked to see them (I had to sign a form either saying I didn't want to see them or that I had been given them), and it specifically said that I had the right to see my medical files if I wanted. I'm guessing that's fairly standard.

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
    BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • I always had a view of the screen for each of the ultrasounds.

Also, there is nothing that could prevent or cause a BO so there was really no reason to go over my history.
