Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Anyone's doc put them on Progesterone?

Hi all-

Unfortuantely, I am back here for a second time this year. My girlfriend, who just had a baby after serveral rounds of IVF, suggested that I look into progesterone supplements after ovulation. She said she has heard this is common for women who've had multiple miscarriages. I am going to ask my doc about it but wondered if  any of you have had experience with this?

This is all kind of new to me. I was not expecting this after having had such a recent miscarriage.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone's doc put them on Progesterone?

  • I'm really sorry for your losses.

Many doctors will put patients on progesterone suppositories after a miscarriage because its one of the most easily treatable causes and it is harmless to both mother and child.

Your body (through the corpus luteum) is supposed to produce enough progesterone itself after ovulation but sometimes it does not and that can lead to a miscarriage.

I'd ask your doctor for a progesterone check at 7dpo (but don't do this until after your betas are back to zero. If its low your doctor can give you a prescription for the progesterone. You'd probably take it twice daily. Its a vaginal suppository.

Some doctors will just give your prescription after your next BFP and won't worry about testing the level because like I said the hormone is harmless. I had my levels tested at 7dpo every cycle for about 6 months and mine was low about 3 of those. I opted for progesterone supp no matter what the levels were and I'd start them right after my blood test at 7dpo. I continued them until 14dpo when I'd go in for a blood test to see if I was pregnant. If I wasn't then I'd stop them and AF would show up a few days later. And of course if I was I kept taking them.

  • So sorry for your losses.  Progesterone is easy to check and treat, so definitely mention it to your doctor.  Have it checked 7 days past ovulation to see if it's high enough to support implantation (usually a level over 10, although some docs have other thresholds, like over 15 or 7.5).  It should also be checked after a BFP to make sure it's still high.  My progesterone was always low, so I take suppositories twice a day starting after ovulation.  I continued them until 10 weeks of pregnancy, when the placenta takes over progesterone production.  There is a controversial slight link between progesterone use and hypospadia in male babies, but the condition is easy treated with surgery and not very common.
