C-sections

Engagement and Wedding Rings

Hi ladies,

I'm having a scheduled csection on Thursday due to another high risk pregnancy.  With DS1 I had stopped wearing my engagement and wedding rings a few months before having him because they were too tight.  This time I am still able to wear my rings and was just wondering if you can still wear yours, will you be wearing them in the hosptial (during the csection)?

  • With ds #1 I wore my rings until 38 wks and then I removed them. I was feeling like I had "sausage" fingers (even though I didn't). Looking back at it now I was being silly and could have worn them until the end.

With ds #2 I actually took my rings off right before I was wheeled into surgery. Since everything was moving so fast I wanted them off just in case (I noticed some swelling this time around).

I know alot of people who wear them during their cs.

  • I swelled badly with DD#1 and removed rings at 30 weeks. This time I made it to 34 weeks (1 week prior to c/s). I could have worn them at the time, but was glad I didn't because my hands swelled a bit after surgery from the fluids/Pitocin I was on. I think it's a good idea to leave them at home so you don't have to worry about them.

  • No I did not. I could still wear them but in case they made me take them off for any reason I did not want them lost or taken. I just left them at home in a safe place. Good Luck!!

  • I left mine at home. Good thing, b/c I blew up like a balloon after my section.

  • I wore mine to the hospital but the nurse made me remove them, she said they like you to have no jewelry on in the surgery room.  She did say she could check with the doctor if I really wanted to wear them, but I didn't mind removing.

  • Leave them home.  They use electric cautery during the surgery it can cause burns if you have metal on.
  • I left mine on both times couldn't really get them off at the end with out water or something. But they just put tape on them for the surgery. No big deal.

I'm fuller sooner this time but so far they are alright but I don't know if I'll make it to the end or not, but if I can I will.

As a nurse, we have to check our patients for any jewlery before we bring you to the OR. So, if you have a planned c section and can manage to get your rings off, do it now, and leave them at home.

I stopped wearing my e ring at about 8 mos preg maybe..I kept my wedding ring on because it never got too tight.

My c section was unplanned, and as they were wheeling me in the OR they asked me to take it off..yeah, not so much. I could not get it off at that point.

There is always the chance you would need it cut off if you swelled a lot, so I would leave it at home.

  • I'm not allowed any jewelry (last time or this time) - with the boys, I just had my husband hang on to them during the surgery and then put them back on once I was in recovery.

  • My hospital made me remove all of my jewelry (rings, bracelet, earrings and necklace) before my c-section. It was either that or everything got taped down.. I had my parents take it home for me and my husband brought it back the day before we were discharged.
