Transitioning to Cow's Milk

My LO will a year on the 29th and I?m so proud of both of us with our breastfeeding experience and making it almost to a year.  I have a couple of questions that I was hoping to discuss with the pedi re: transitioning to cow?s milk but I won?t see him until a couple weeks after LO turns one.  My questions are: 1) Did you wean your LO or allow LO to wean themselves?  2) When introducing cow?s milk can I mix it with breast milk to send to daycare or should I send it in separate bottles?  3) If I mix, how long is that mixture good for (I usually try to use expressed breast milk within 3-5 days)? 4) If I introduce separately, how much did you start off with?

I am terrified about LO having stomach issues during the transition.  My brother and both his girls are lactate intolerance (I am not) and my grandmother was too.  My husband has a cousin who has a little girl and they introduced cow?s milk at a year and the little one had stomach/bowel issues for months.

Any suggestions to help with this transition is appreciated.

Re: Transitioning to Cow's Milk

  • I don't have answers but am waiting to ask my pedi tomorrow.  Our little one didn't tolerate breast milk (even watching my diet) or regular formula.  Soy was the only thing that didn't give him instant diarriah(Spelling???).  So I am cautious to move to cows milk at this point, I know its cheaper but uggg I hate diarriah!

  • Our pedi told us to just give it to him and see how he handled it. DH and I were on vacation for the week (just staying at home together) so we tried it. I gave him 4 oz at first. He just chugged the entire cup. We increased how much he got at a time and he's had very little problems. I've noticed some really rancid smelling poo but I'm not sure if it's related.

Combination.  I am reducing him down to 1 time per day (at night), and then I'll see how he'd like to proceed.

    2) When introducing cow?s milk can I mix it with breast milk to send to daycare or should I send it in separate bottles?

I did not mix the cow's milk with my breast milk.  I gave it to him separately.

    4) If I introduce separately, how much did you start off with?

I started the transition after LO turned 1.  At that time he was nursing 4x/day (wake-up, before am nap, before pm nap, before bed).  I was feeding him three solid meals a day with water at each.  I just offered him milk instead of water at the meals.  That went well, so DC started offering him milk instead of bm.  They make sure to offer him an increased amount of snacks too.  Basically, he is still eating every few hours, just now instead of nursing it's crackers and milk.  I haven't paid much attention to actual ounces, I just let him have what he wants.
