Natural Birth

Okay, I know this is a silly question, but humor me anyway.

DH and I are going away in 2 weekends.  It's 2 weeks before my EDD.  We'll only be about 4hrs away, and I was late with DD (I know that doesn't really mean anything though)  But I'm starting to get nervous about going into labor while we're away and having to rush back to get to the hospital.

Anyway, I have a MW apt the day before we leave.  I'm contimplating asking her to do an internal just to see whats up down there.  But I know, that also doesn't really mean much, 'cause I could be closed up like Fort knox on day and dilated to 10 the next.....  Also, I wonder if having the internal could mess with stuff and start my labor.  I had one internal done (It's the only one they really like to do on STM's) and After that, I lost a lot of mucus.

I haven't had much in the way of contractions yet.  So WDYT?  internal, or no?

  • Personally I would stick close to home but that's a very personal decision.  I almost went out of town at 38 weeks with my DS (a few hours driving) and then ended up going into labor when I would have been gone. I was so glad I decided against it.

Aside from that, if you do decide to go, I don't think I"d even have her check.  As you said, it doesn't really matter so I would just follow my gut.  You could be at 3cm for a week or at nothing and have the baby a few hours later.  You just never know.

  • 2 hrs wouldn't worry me. I know some VBAC moms who are traveling that far to see VBAC supportive providers and will have to drive that to reach the hospital. The drive won't be fun but if you leave as soon as you're confident that labor has started then you should have plenty of time to make it to the hospital.

Just have a plan in place for what if... and then go enjoy yourself.

I would make sure to have any labor necessities in the car just in case but given the fact that you probably won't go into labor and even if you do 2 hrs is doable (though not fun) if you do go into labor I'd go on the trip and enjoy it.

After all if you end up not going into labor until after that weekend wouldn't you regret not having that last trip?

  • I'd personally say no internal.

And I'm sure you've heard it before but the 2nd can come much quicker than the first. When my Mum had her 2nd, she was 15 minutes from the hospital and almost didn't make it.

I have contemplated going 4 hrs to see family close to my due date with the same thought that I can make it but then realized even if I can make it, do I really want to be laboring in the car for 4 hours?

    Good luck!

  • I was in labour with my first for 16 hours, and with my second for just two. If I had been four hours away and attempted the drive I would have delivered in the car. I wouldn't want to attempt that drive.

Is there a hospital closer to where you'll be if you go into labour?

Oh most certainly.  And they are good ones too. I've looked into them.  It would just be a matter of trying to get to MY hospital so I could deliver with MY MWs.   I'm also going to talk to my MW about it when I see her on Thurs.

  • I wouldn't have an internal done, for the reasons you mentioned.  It really doesn't give any helpful info, much as we sometimes wish otherwise.

I would try not to go that far so close to the EDD if it were me.

  • Personally, I would not take the trip.  I'm pretty easy going about a lot of stuff but 2 weeks out with your second babe...things could happen in a jiff.

My second came 2.5 hours after I noticed contractions and only about 15 minutes after I was sure I was in labour.

So, the internal for me would be 'no' but in reality I don't think I would take the trip.

  • I was given a edd of sept 2nd, I went camping august 23rd-26th.

I went for a few reasons.

First off I wanted to go on a vacation and just relax before the baby came.

Secondly I 'knew' the date I had been given was wrong, I had picked sept 17th (yeah big difference) so i used that as my 'edd' rather than the one I got from the ultrasound.

Two weeks is pretty close, you need to trust your own instincts.... I also was only about 45 minutes from a hospital (not my hospital) so 'if' something came up that was an option. I am really glad I went I got some great  rest in and some cool pictures! Good luck on your decision!

  • That's a hard one and I would probably not go at all. DD came two weeks early and I couldn't imagine being 4 hours away from home. Even though you anticipate going later towards your due date, the fact that it's your second and second labors tend to go quicker would make nervous. If you do decide to go, I say no on the internal. Like you said you can go from no progess today and be in labor tomorrow.

Ditto. Especially with following your gut. make whatever plans you make tentative for now and then the days before decide for sure. This is the one time in life you can cancel at the last second and no one will judge you for it =)

  • I'd go with no internal personally ;) just make sure that you know where the closest hospital is if things progress more quickly than you think!

  • I don't know if this would be a consideration for you, but I happened to be looking at my health insurance policy today and saw that they would not cover delivery outside the service area after 37 weeks. That would probably factor into my own decision...
