House hunting while infertile :/

We're once again actively looking @ houses after putting it on the back burner last year when we had to buy a new car & make an emergency trip to India.  While we love our rental (2 bed 1 bath with a full basement & side yard; it's a duplex on a dead end street & our awesome landlord lives next door) we could totally buy with what we pay in rent.  We're looking @ 3 bed, 2 bath houses so we're not talking mansions, btw.

Still, every house we look @ makes me sad, especially when the realtor makes a comment about things like "and the yard's plenty big enough for a swingset".  Gee, thanks for the reminder we may never have an opportunity to put up a swingset.  I guess the fact we're a married couple in our 30s = we must have kids or pregnant by now.

I've toyed with the idea of looking @ condos since we technically don't need a ton of room for the 2 of us.  But a yard is kind of needed since we have a dog.  And then there's that stupid little voice that whispers "the next IVF might work & then you'd need more room".

Am I alone in this?

  • My thoughts on the condo idea= don't do it!  The RE market is still so bad in RI and other people don't pay their condo fees.  The condo assoc then doesn't have enough $$ to maintain the complex and ups your fees. You can't control the special assessments and can get wacked with higher monthly fees at the drop of a dime.  I work in this industry and you could not give me a condo right now.. Keep looking for the single family.

I could not escape the neighborhood kids this weekend. Since it was nice outside, everyone was outside, of course. Kids were everywhere. I just wanted to mow my lawn without having to witness all the kids playing together.

My mom is in RE & she tells me the same thing.  Kid free development, anyone?  How sad it may come to that.

  • I know where you're coming from.  If this FET doesn't work, we'll start looking for something a little less kid-friendly (our neighbourhood is ridiculous) but I don't want to sell my house "just in case" I need it down the line.

  • On Friday, during DH and my tear-fest, one of the biggest things that broke my heart was hearing him say ?I was looking forward to fighting with you on how we rearrange the bedroom situation.? Of course when we bought our house two years ago we planned on one day using one as a nursery. The second biggest bedroom is my craft room and the smallest is a guest bedroom (used very, very frequently). We also have a very large yard (1.5 acres) and the dog loves every inch of it. I love the privacy of a house vs. a townhome or condo. I don?t want to share walls with anyone else. Been there, done that!

My advice is to look for a SFH and three bedrooms. It?s amazing how you end up using all the rooms.

I agree with this. When DH and I bought our house last year (it is a 2/1), we had intended for the other room to be a nursery. Given that it will not be that for a while, it is our office/craft room.

  • Oh honey, I hear ya.  When Dh and I moved in Summer 2010, we bought a house with a huge 3+ acre yard and I was thinking how perfect it would be for the kids to play.  Dh said he wanted a big yard and he does the mowing, but it just depresses me that I'm not actually going to use that space myself.  We also have a perfect open area upstairs outside the bedrooms that would be great for a play room.... Someday.

Even though it can be sad, I agree with the others that you should get the house... You'll be glad you did.e
