Nurse to sleep

Flame away but I don't know how else to do it.

When I read others say eat, play, sleep I don't get it. If I just put R down he'd cry. So how do you do it?

Re: Nurse to sleep

  • No idea.. I nurse to sleep too.  It's the only way Brandon will get to sleep.

  • I did that for about a half a week, was ready to jump of a high rise, then I stuck a pacifier in his mouth. Magic. Do you use a pacifier/have you tried it? Some babies just need to suck :)
  • I give him a paci and rock him. However, he was inconsolable for his am nap this morning, so I gave him a boob and he fell asleep.

  • I still nurse to sleep for naps - or at least DS falls asleep often during day time feedings. At night, he has become so accustomed to his schedule that no matter what time he eats, he falls dead asleep by 8:30. And like PPs said - pacifier! I said I would never do a pacifier, but quickly found that the sucking reflex is soothing. It also makes an easier transition if you give the pacifier while still holding baby and putting him down with it, rather than laying him down and then trying to give it.

  • I TOTALLY don't get it either.  I have no idea how other people do this.  They must be crying it out or have babies that fall asleep with no help at all.  I don't care to try this method because I enjoy nursing my daughter to sleep and I'm not interested in crying it out.
  • I see you all use a pacifer.  My daughter won't take a pacifier even though I've tried to give it to her since the first week.  She spits it out and cries.  Oh well, nursing to sleep doesn't really bother me.  If I had to spend half an hour rocking her with a pacifier or half an hour nursing her, it'd be the same amount of time spent either way.
  • I usually nurse him to sleep for bedtime at night. We play a little, do his bath (every other day), get him changed, and then sit in bed and I nurse him. If he's not tired after the first side, I sit him on my lap and we watch a little tv until he gets fussy (usually 10 minutes or so), then turn the tv off and nurse him on the other side, swaddle him and put him in the cosleeper. If he doesn't fall asleep after a little while, I'll pick him back up and nurse him swaddled and then put him back and he'll go right to sleep. Sometimes I feed him before a nap but that's usually because we're going through the routine to see why he's getting fussy. And I always nurse him after he sleeps. Works well for us, I can't imagine just letting him lay there and CIO. My heart would break for sure.

  • My DD will fall asleep while nursing but wakes up as soon as I put her down. So we use a paci. Downfall: she still doesn't know to keep it in her mouth so she wakes up. So now, she will wake up every half hour or so crying for her paci. Oyyyy Tongue Tied

  • Sometimes lo will fall asleep on her own but 80-90% of the time I nurse her to sleep. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with nursing to sleep - its a parenting choice. I enjoy nursing my lo and have no problem with her being dependent on me to help her get to sleep at this stage in her life.

  • I didn't realize nursing to sleep was flame-worthy. I always offer a bottle when putting DD down to sleep; although the last few nights she has started refusing to eat while swaddled and ready for bed and just falls asleep in my arms while I sit in the chair--basically exactly as if she was eating, but without eating.

If you haven't already start a bedtime routine.  Ours is "brush teeth" (gum stimulator), change diaper, get saddled, cuddle/feed/bedtime story, then just cuddling/feeding while I read my own book until she is asleep and I can put her down without waking her.

  • Lots and lots of pacing with a bouncy step puts her to sleep but that can be very annoying.

I almost always nurse to sleep. Ds is not really into the pacifier but will take it sometimes.

  • I do it most of the time, because DD pretty much falls asleep at the boob with every feeding. Sometimes her evening feeding (6-7pm one) she'll still be awake, which is fine.

It makes my life easier now, but I worry about the future.
