As a first time mom, I guess I'm a *little* excited by baby diaper deals and clearance clothes at Target!
I just wanted to ask those more experienced... how much is too much? Should I stop buying diapers on sale? I only have about 5 boxes of various sizes [some were gifts from the mother in law and I bought two myself] so I'm not completely overboard yet, but I'm thinking someone who has done this before might have a better idea of what they did.
I also keep telling myself that I'm sure I'll get a lot of clothes at my shower, but if I see something at Target I'll grab it on my way out.
Advice please, thanks! ;D
Re: How Much Is Too Much [Stocking Up]
You really can't have too many diapers. I just wouldn't buy too many of the newborn size. As a tip of advice, sign up for Amazon Mom... the diapers are cheaper than any you'll get at the store.
I think it's smart to stock up on diapers.

We had stocked up on diapers and before DS was born, and it was really helpful. We also had a lot of clothes, but DS was pretty small when he was born (6 pounds even) so we ended up buying some preemie clothes to get him through the first few weeks, since NB clothes were enormous on him, so last-minute needs can happen.
I agree with other mamas - leave the boxes of diapers unopened so you can return/exchange any sizes you don't end up using.
I wouldn't stock up too much on diapers because you don't know what kind will work best. I would get 2-4 packs of newborn and that's it. DS never wore newborn and I ended up giving all away to friends that had babies (I do have one pack for this baby). Get a case or 2 of size one. We used our gift cards to stock up on diapers after we knew which ones worked best for us.
DS has a lot of clothes. He had refulx as a baby and would get changed multiple times a day.
The only issues I see with stocking up on diaper is a) what if you don't like the brand you bought (I didn't like Luvs, I only liked Huggies) and b) finding a place to keep them.
I will say that if Wal-Mart sells that packaging, they'll let you exchange them if they're unopened. H's coworkers had a diaper shower for us when we had DS and we exchanged all the other brands or the sizes we didn't need for the brand and sizes we needed.

As a mother of (going to be) 3 children, I have learned that I do not 'need' as much stuff now as a 'wanted' when I had my first. My first had an excessive amount of clothes and wore about half of them 2-3x - the rest she never wore and I gave away or sold at a second hand store.
With this baby I will have a few pieces of clothes - some I have saved, others I *may* buy new or from a consignment store. Using all of my money on clothes that will fit my kid for maybe a month isn't worth it - I would rather put money into big things I will need as my child grows or save the cash.
But I am just a Debbie Downer 3rd time mama, who stays at home!!
Get as much as you want... you only get to be a mom for the first time 1x - I say embrace it if you can afford it!!
I didn't really think about brand differences. So far I just have Huggies - so I'm glad to hear that's the brand you're loyal too! Thanks!
I'm so naive, I didn't even think about sensitive skin. Thank you!
Haha! Well, I'm not exactly buying things that are full priced. I've had great luck at Target with things that are marked down to about $4 and ring up for just $2! I always make myself leave before I clear out the clearance rack.
I discovered a great consignment store here where I live too - so I hope to use that for some things as well. Though, their prices are actually more for used clothes than my $2 Target scores.
i've never been to a consignment shop that had cheaply priced baby clothing. If you know the sex of the baby [because at least for me, gender neutral has been impossible to find] the best deals are on craigslist or at garage sales [think .25 cents for clothes that look brand new]

I think it's NOT a good idea to stock up. What if the brand you pick leaks? Or what if the fit is weird on your baby? Or what if they grow faster than you expect?
Sure, buy a couple packs but not like 20.
