C-sections

Anyone here have a myomectomy previously?

I had an abdominal myo back in 2008 for a softball size submucosal fibroid on the posterior wall of my uterus.  Just one fibroid, but it was BIG.  Since it was submucosal they did have to remove a portion of my uterus.  Because of this I was told that I would not be able to deliver vaginally, and shouldn't go into labor due to the risk of uterine rupture.

Anyone here have the same kind of surgery and then go on to have a pregnancy/c-section?  What was your experience?  Did your doctor also state absolutely no vaginal birth?  How early was your c-section scheduled?

I know under most conditions a doctor will not do a scheduled c-section prior to 39 weeks, but did your OB consider the possibility of uterine rupture a reason to go earlier?

I will be talking to my own OB about this obviously, but wanted to see what others were told also.

  • Somewhat similar--I had a myomectomy July 2011 to remove a two large (13 cm and 9 cm) and very degenerated fibroids.  Dr didn't have to go all the way through my ute.  I had a previous c-section due to fibroids causing DS to be breech.  She's letting me attempt vaginal delivery since surgery was not all the way through uterus.  My dr feels that my risk for uterine rupture is low...about or slightly less than 1%.  Although, now that I'm pregnant and uterus is obviously growing, I feel aches and slight pain at my incision spots.  Makes me worry but dr says it normal.  We'll see what happens from here on out...GL to you!

  • I had a very similar surgery in 2001 (my fibroid was grapefruit sized).  With my first DD, I was scheduled at 39w3d. My OB didn't even check my cervix and I had no signs of labor before  the c-section.  With this pregnancy, I am scheduled at 39w exactly and again, dr seems pretty relaxed about the whole thing.  No cervical checks.  They don't seem too concerned about uterine rupture.  I still worry, but try not to let it get the best of me.  I figure at any sign  of labor, I am heading in, though!  Good luck!

  • Oh, and my c-section recovery was SOOOO much easier than the myomectomy surgery.  I assume because the myomectomy was such a long surgery and I lost a lot of blood (had to be transfused).  I don't know, but it was just much, much better.

I had a very small fibroid removed at the end of 2010.  I don't think they're going to let me try to labor but my Ob is calling the surgeon to get additional notes.

She said it would depend on where the fibroid was and how embedded it was in the muscle.  I guess if it's at the upper part of the uterus the risk of rupture is higher because that's where the contractions are strongest.  I have a feeling they aren't going to support a vaginal birth but I'll have to wait until my next appt to find out.
