Baby changing position after 36 weeks?

How much can your baby move after 36 weeks?

I am at 37 going on 38. At my 36 week checkup, the Dr. said my baby was head down, and his rump was on my right side. Which made sense, because I could feel hands/feet movement to my left.

Today things are feeling different. I keep feeling what I think is a hand or foot pushing out on my right side. I don't know how to tell if he is still head down, but I can feel a larger mass on my left that might be a rump or head.

Anyone else noticing some big positions changes this late in the game?

Re: Baby changing position after 36 weeks?

  • I'm 37 weeks tomorrow, and baby keeps shifting.  We think baby is still head-down (was breech a week ago), but kiddo definitely shifts transverse or off-kilter frequently.  The head is not at all engaged in the pelvis yet, and despite how big the baby is, apparently, there is still room to move.

I have a friend who declined induction at 40 weeks when baby was head down (planned on a med-free delivery) and her son flipped transverse at 41 weeks and was delivered via planned c-section, so it is possible if the baby isn't engaged yet and has room/fluid to manouever.

  • Mine did.  At 36 weeks, he was breech.  At 37 weeks, he wasn't.  I kind of suspect he's flipped again here at 38 weeks, but I'll know for sure on Tuesday.
  • Thanks ... when they told me the other week that he was head down and unlikely to move, I thought I was in the clear but now I'm not so sure. Hopefully he'll move again!

  • A friend of mine had a breech baby at 37 weeks, so her OB scheduled a section. When she went in for the section at 40 weeks she had completely flipped and was head down, so her OB sent her home!

  • This may come offensive to some people, but I think it has alot too do with what size you are. My doctor confirmed my baby heads down at 29 weeks. He said with the size I am he would be very shocked if the baby flipped again as theirs really not room.

Well I know someone who is big boned and was very overweight. Her baby was breach until close to the end, flipped heads down and then when she was induced the baby had flipped sideways.

I don't think this is necessarily true.  I'm 5'2" and slim (115 pre-preg, 140 now at 38.5 weeks)  @36 weeks baby was breech and a week ago he flipped head down, so you don't have to be big to have movement this late in the game
