C-Section Infection (+newborn PIP) =)

Just when I got the hang of BFing, I have to stop for awhile. =/

Yesterday, I was trying to adjust my steri strips over my c secton incision cause I felt like it was poking me.  When I stuck my hand down there to fix it, my hand was all wet.  I had all his fluid discharge (yellowish color) and it totally freaked me out.

Ended up going to the ER.  Luckily, the in laws were here and were able to care for Quinn.  It was just heartbreaking to leave her for the first time without her mommy and daddy.  I was at the ER for a good 5 hours.  It turned out to be a wound infection.  They cleaned it up and just covered the small opening with gauze.  They also hooked me up to an IV with antibiotics because my white blood cell count was elevated.  The OB on call said to just let it drain..change the gauze and clean it and keep moving.  I have a follow up appointment in 10 days.  I'm hoping it heals fully by then.

No breastfeeding for the next few days due to the medication the dr. gave me. =/  I have to pump it and dump it for now and give her formula.  Boo.

I couldn't wait to get home to Quinn.  I was whining like a baby at the hospital how I wanted to go home and be with her.  I was also telling DH on our way home how weird it was that she wasn't in the car with us.

Just wanted to rant.  Anyone else ever had a c-section wound infection?  How long did it take for yours to heal?

Totally off topic.. here's some photos that my brother took of our little one.  He is a very excited and happy Uncle.  He drops by everyday just to see her.

  • Is there any reason your DD can't be with you during ur hospital stay?  With DD#1 I had a nasty infection which hospitalized me for five days. My DD was allowed to be with me as long as someone else was there to assist with her as I was bed ridden. That being said, DH, DD and I spent five long days in hospital. I ended up needed a surgery to get better.  It took me nine weeks to fully heAl. Also, I never had to stop brestfeeding, the doctors said I had to buy the lactation consultant said I did not, even with iv antibiotics and pain meds. I would def check into that with someone who I'd more specialized in brestfeeding! Good luck!

I'm not in the hospital.  It was just a few hours.  Since I was in the ER, I never got to see the DR before I left.  The nurse told me to ask the pharmacist regarding the medication.  We did, and she was not sure (I think she even googled it!).  She said there were contradictory reports or whatever.  She said it probably wouldn't be best to breast feed since my LO is not more than 1 month old, plus she has had a history of jaundice.  She said if we do decided to breastfeed to watch out for jaundice symptoms.  I'd rather be safe than sorry.  We also consulted 2 family friends who are OBs and they too said to pump it and dump it and stick to formula for now.

Glad it was only for a few hours and not any longer.  It was my OB who also said not to continue the brestfeeding.   That's why I mentioned seeking lactation consultant advice; they know much much more regarding such situations.  this is just my experience and thought I would share. Hope your LO transitions back to BM well!

I have an infection in some lymph(something) my doctor said it was some tubes in my body that got infection (not the fallipon tubes) and it caused me SEVERE pain, like I could not walk or talk.  I did make it to my OB/GYN office and they put me on antibotics and pain meds for two weeks.  Thankfully my incision site looks okay, but I first notice a rash around my incision site and the doc said that my body reacting to the infection.  Good luck to you and I hope you feel better!
