Spray Tanning or Tanning lotions?

Hello Ladies,

So my legs are PALE! I mean...my whole body is pale.  Spring is here and the weather is starting to warm up.  Usually, around this time of the year, I use the lotions with bronzers/self-tanners and beginning in May/June I hit the beach...well, now that I feel like a whale...basking in the sun seems like a punishment.  Anyone know if it's okay to do spray tanning or use the self-tanning lotions?

  • Spray Tanning is definitely safe.  Look for salons that use the VersaSpa system :)

  • I havent used the lotions in while, but I think they have come a long way without steaking or making you look orange. I am  not as familiar with the spray tans/booths, but when pregnant with DS I did have an airbrush tan where a lady actually mixed the stuff and sprayed it on me herself. It was made with all natural ingredients.

As an oncology RN, I wont get on my soap box about how awful it is to tan outside/booth whether you are a whale or not. :)

  • My OB told me there's no studies to support whether it's safe or not, and to avoid all sunless tanners.  I got some natural sun today with my spf 50 :)

  • My OB said spray tanning and lotions are fine. I have been using my jergens gradual tan about 3 times a week.

  • I just did some searching on DHA because as a redhead with blue eyes I am casper the friendly summer ghost!

DHA is derived from sugar beets and according to the FDA is safe as long as it is NOT ingested or gets in mucous membranes.  It is basically a coloring agent that binds to dead skin cells when applied and then sloughs off in 3 to 4 days, doesn't sound like it seeps into your blood stream.  The FDA says it is NOT approved for spray tans because it could get breathed in or in eyes, nose, etc... looks like I need to call my local spray tan place and find out what their ingredients are.  If it doesn't contain DHA and it all natural ingredients then it may be a wiser choice than the Jergens I've been using.

  • This is what I use and I love it... It doesn't streak and is a nice, deep brown. Dries quick, too! I know the brand might throw you off, but it's a good product.
