STTN

What is a realistic expectation for when my son will sleep through the night without feeding?  He is 6 months now almost..4 mo adjusted..and is still eating every 4 hours at night.  I don't want to have unrealistic expectations for him.  I know each child is different, but is there a weight that I can start to challenge him a little more with nighttime feedings?  He is already 17 lb!  My little porkchop :)  Thanks for any advice!

  • I'm still waiting! Mine only sleeps through the night on a rare occasion; she's 9 months old today, almost 7 adjusted.

    ETA: She's also 17 lbs.

  • Sorry to say this but it won't just happen magically. If you wait it may not happen until your baby is 2! I suggest reading some baby sleep books to help you teach your baby to sleep. At 17 pounds he should be able to go over 6 hours. It's more about him learning to self soothe and be able to put himself back to sleep when he wakes.

  • I think every baby is different.  Ryan came home when he was 4 months/3 weeks adjusted and we were waking him to feed every three hours.  A week later the pedi was happy with his weight gain and allowed us to feed on demand.  At that point he was sleeping a 5-6 hour stretch at night.  Same thing for Aiden, but he was on a four hour schedule for a while.  Now at 6.5 months/3 months adjusted they are sleeping from 9pm-9am with a 7am feed in there...but last night they skipped it.

I think that at a certain point you have to get them used to not eating at night.  Are you sure he is really hungry?  Or is it just a way for him to be soothed?
