April 2012 Moms

I'm ready to be an active mama

How are you guys managing your time with your LO's and working out?

I want to join a gym and I think Edie would like going to the Kids Zone there.  But Adeline is too small.  I wouldn't be comfortable leaving her.

Strollers aren't an option.  Edie won't sit in one.  Technically, not suppsed to jog with an infant who doesn't have head control.  But, guys, my "jog" is slower than my walk.  I'm not kidding.  Either way, that would only take care of one kid.

My other option is just leaving them with DH.  Which I guess I could do.  But I don't think he's very supportive of the whole thing (esp me joining a gym) so I'd talk myself out of working out a lot.

Re: I'm ready to be an active mama

  • I'm ready to be active again too, but I still have 3 weeks before I'm cleared for exercise. Im hoping to leave Kate with DH, while I take Ella running (hopefully she will sit in the BOB), and try to do longer runs during naptime.

  • I'm hoping to start walking asap and keep that up for longer amounts of time and hopefully get faster. I lost a lot of muscle tone during pregnancy.

Can you put the baby in a carrier and the older one in the stroller and walk? All the extra resistance will make it more difficult for awhile.

is it nice out in your area yet?

  • Can you get up before your kids and walk?  Squats are great exercise too and you don't need a gym for them either.

  • there's a ton of body-weight stuff you can do at a playground. Take your older one to play there and strap on the baby.

    step ups
    push ups
    tricep dips
    walking lunges
    squats
    *bring a band and do:

    rows
    bicep curls
    shoulder raises

This is how I used to workout when my son was little.

     Here's a resource I found via google.

  • You can walk (even power walk) with the baby in an ergo - just use the infant insert. The extra weight of the baby will help and it will be nice for her to get some fresh air! My friend lost a lot of weight this way ! :)

  • This summer will likely just be a lot of walking. I also have a lot of at home workouts and the kids nap for a couple hours at the same time, so I see myself doing a lot of that. Until I get a double stroller I don't see being able to manage Stroller Strides and, like you said, can't jog with both of them until next year.

  • If you have Netflix, there are loads of fitness videos you can rent or stream to workout at home. I've done some on YouTube and borrowed ones from the library before.

  • You know I've looked into the jogging with a baby in a carrier option before they have head comtrol and there seems to be mixed opinions. I even asked about it once on the health and fitness board.  People that already had babies at the time said their doctors said it was fine.  You could ask yours...   The mixed opinion thoughts were that if you're running on a smooth surface it wouldn't be any bumpier, probably less than if you were in a car.  These makes sense to me...    I havnt found any strong evidence in the differing direction...  My best guess is it's a guidline stroller companies use to cover their butts for people wanting to go all terrain with a youngin...
