So I have been on the hunt for the "perfect" dresser that I can use as a changing table that can "grow" with the baby. I want it to be pretty long so that I can put the changing pad on top, but still have plenty of room for other stuff on top. Alot of the "changing dressers" designed to go with a crib set are not very long at all. Most only have room for the changing pad and nothing else. I've also had serious sticker shock! I went to two local places that carry unfinshed pine furniture, thinking I'd find something and stain it to match a crib . . . but one place quoted me ~$500, and the other quoted me $800 - $1000! No way! True it is solid wood . . . but its unfinshed PINE!!! Anyway, I wanted something sturdy, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg becasue there is a good chance the kid will put stickers all over it or draw on it, etc.
Anyway, I found this Ikea Hemnes 8 drawer dresser online for $300. https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/00067830/
It's gotten some great reviews. Seems like it is on the higher end of Ikea and is pretty sturdy. I'm going to check it out this weekend!
However I'm not sure about the colors it comes in: White (reviews say it is more of a cream), Black-Brown (reviews say it is closer to black), Blue, and Gray/Brown.
I really want to match the crib as much as possible . . . I'm looking at Graco and Delta cribs since their prices are resonable, but am open to other suggestions. I'm doing a gender neutral nursey (jungle theme) and really think a medium wood tone would look the best. However that's probably the hardest wood tone to match!!! So I'm guessing the Gray/Brown is my best bet. But not sure if I can find a cib to match?!?!?
This is what I've seen on some old posts on this board:
White Dresser: Some posts say the white dresser is more cream and doesn't match the white cribs very well the Graco and Delta cribs are white-white. Yet other posts say the white dresser matches the Graco cribs??? Plus I'm not sure how white would look with the junge theme. Also might be too feminine.
Black/Brown Dresser: Posts say the dresser is closer to black, and it would go better with a blck crib versus a cherry or espresso crib. I read that the Graco espresso crib is more cherry than espresso. Yet other reviews say it matches great. Anyone know if the Delta espresso crib would match this dresser? I'm also afraid black might be too dark for a baby / childs room.
Blue: No posts about the blue. Plus I'd never match the crib. Although the color does look pretty cool. Maybe a blue dresser and a med tone crib? But it blue too boy-ish?
Gray/Brown: This is a medium tone . . . but I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a crib to "match"?
HELP!!! I really like this dresser but am now in a rut about which crib will match?!?!?

Re: Crib to Match Ikea Hemnes Dresser in Gray/Brown ?!?!?
Update:
I know Ikea has cribs that would match. The SUNDVIK crib comes in the gray-brown color. But I'm not sure I like the crib. Two of the sides are not slatted, so that worries me about air flow. Plus I'm not sure how sturdy ikea cribs are. I'd really like a Graco, Delta, or something comperable.

DS has a Gulliver crib in gray/brown at my mom's house. It is very sturdy and completely safe. It's really cute in his room over there. He takes two naps in it every day.
All cribs that are sold in this country meet the same safety guidelines. A more spendy brand =/= safer. It just means you're paying more for the same thing.

There are TONS of us on here who own an Ikea Crib. They are perfectly sturdy. I didn't like the closed ends, either, so we got the gulliver. I love the gulliver and would recommend it to anyone! You cannot beat the price, and it's nice and modern. We have it in white and have the Hemnes 8 drawer dresser in white, too.
I think it will e hard to match that "Gray-brown." Have you gone to see it in person? We saw it and thought it was a really dirty looking color in person.
I remember there were some people who painted the Gulliver the color they wanted when we were all pregnant. They used "safe" paints, but I don't know anything about that.
Ditto this. It is a very unique color. You're not going to find anything that exactly matches it.
My mom used a dark sage green on the walls and the floors were already white-washed oak... somehow those coupled with the gray/brown actually looks kinda cool. Not sure how she did that.

If you want to do pine and stain it--Ikea does have an option for that--though I am sure if you have looked everywhere you have seen it. I've been having a hard time find the same kind of dresser you are looking for.
Here is a link for the pine one from Ikea. It's 2 inches shorter than the Hemnes, it's called the Tarva.

We have that exact dresser, and we're going with the white Gulliver over the same color Sundvick - I like the open ends and style of the Gulliver. It was too much grey (we have very light grey walls and a chalkboard accent wall) in the room with the grey crib, too. I know that Ouef makes a gorgeous grey crib, but I don't think it would go very well with the grey/brown Hemnes. Keep in mind that it's more of a translucent color (like a stain) than opaque (like paint).
I had been considering some of the Babyletto cribs that are the same general style (all the sides are the same height, all sides are slatted, very modern looking), but it made more sense to me to spend $100 on a perfectly safe crib and buy a nicer (non-toxic) mattress.
Thanks for all your replies.
I know the cribs at ikea are safe . . . I guess I ment to say that I am not sure if they are my style. They are very modern, and I am more on the traditional side. Not super traditional, but somewhere inbetween. Which is why I like the simple Graco and Delta cribs.
I know the crib won't be in there forever, but I'm hoping if we have a 2nd child, the second child will take over the nursery, and the first one will move into a "big boy/girl" room/bed/etc.
I haven't gone to see the Hemnes dresser yet. Ikea is about an hour away so we plan to go there this weekend. Just looking at it online I thought the gray/brown color looked unique, and that concerned me. If everything is perfect, excpet the color, maybe we'll paint it (DH that is) to match a wood finish of the crib.
I did look at the TARVA online at Ikea. Its a little shorter and not as long. But still a decent size. DH was concerned though becasue it is only 15 3/8 " deep (Hemnes is 20 1/8 "deep). I think the changing pad is 16", so DH is concerned that it doesn't leave much wiggle room. But I think we'll look at it when we go. But he's really concerned that its not deep enough. Although I like the idea of it being unfinsished and stainable!
Unfortunitally it sounds like you ladies are telling me exactly what I didn't want to hear! LOL!

They all meet the same MINIMUM standards. Some go above and beyond that, so while they are all "approved" some can actually be better. Same with car seats.
We just bought our IKEA Hemnes last week. We also bought the Gulliver Crib and Expedit bookshelf, all in white, and they all match.
The Gulliver crib is very sturdy, as is the bookshelf and dresser. We couldn't be happier with our choice, and seeing as how we only spend about $450 on all the furniture pieces combined, it's a great deal.
I would highly recommend the white furniture, and don't think it's too feminine at all. (We had this furniture picked out before we knew we were having a girl).
I got the Hemnes in white and I think it's pretty white. It's next to a white-white bookcase and rocker... which looks fine. I'm going to get the Graco Lauren in white also. I don't think white is too feminine for a boy, but that's just me. I think the white option will match better than any other color.
Btw, I love the Hemnes dresser! It was easy for DH to put together and seems very sturdy for the price. I also like the gray/brown color, but it doesn't go with anything
This is us, too. I think they look perfectly fine together, but being on opposite walls probably does help. DD is almost 21 months old, and both have held up well.
We had the Hemnes dresser in gray-brown before I got pregnant and planned to use it for the baby's room once we found out we were expecting. We had originally planned to buy a white crib for either a boy or girl. When we went to ikea to buy it we saw that they have the gray-brown sunvick, so we got the matching crib for our dresser. We love it. I think you definitely have to think about your color scheme, but a lot would go with it. We are doing an outer space theme with light grayish blue walls, a navy accent wall, and bright green accent pieces in the room. The color of the furniture looks awesome with it.
Meh. I have a moderately spendy crib ($$ or $$$, definitely not a four or five... yikes) and my mom has an Ikea Gulliver. Other than the style differences, I don't see or feel a drastic difference.
DS sleeps equally well in both.

Thanks ladies for all your feedback . . . we went to ikea yesterday just to look and went window shopping at cribs.
We decided to get the Graco Lauren Signature Crib (a litlte more sturdy than the Graco Lauren Classic for the same price!). We also decided on the Hemnes dresser and a Billy bookshelf from ikea.
Although still deciding on the colors . . . ug! I'm so indecisive!
Optiion 1: "Matchy-matchy-ish" - Crib in espresso. Then hemnes dresser and billy bookshlef in black-brown. Although the crib doesn't match exactly, its close. Then when the crib leaves the room, the hemnes dresser and billy bookshelf will still mactch.
Option 2: "Electic" - I really like the blue hemnes dresser. It's kind of unexpected! Then pairing it with the "rustic cherry" crib and the medium brown billy bookcase. (I actually bought the bookcase so I can take a peice to BRU this afternoon to see if it is close to the crib color). If so . . . the crib and bookshelf will be med-browns and the dresser will be blue. But then when the crib leaves the room, I'll have a brown bookshelf and a blue dresser.
Option 3: "Eclectic" - If the med brown billy bookshelf doesn;t look right with the crib . . . maybe do the brown-black billy bookshelf with the expresso crib. And still do the blue hemnes dresser. Then when the crib leaves the room there will be a blue dresser and a black-brown bookshelf.
ps - I really like the blue dresser. But am concerned it might be too boy-ish (espcahlly with a jungle theme). DH seems to think it is gender neutral enough.
Ug! Am I overthinking all of this (I've been known to be an overthinker!!!)

The crib I have already ordered is Baby Cache, espresso. I was debating on getting the Hemnes dresser in black-brown or blue. I really love the blue, but I'm not sure how it will look with an espresso crib. But, I've heard the black-brown dresser is closer to black, so I don't know how that will look with the espresso crib either.
Why does this have to be so difficult? lol
