Bath/bedtime help

How do you coordinate bath/bedtime at night? My DH works 48 hr shifts every four days so it will just be me those two nights. I don't know what to do with DS while I bathe DD, jammies, bottle and bed. He's too distracting in her room but if I put him in his room he cries as if I'm abandoning him. Help?!

Re: Bath/bedtime help

  • Does he like the bouncer or swing?  Could you put him down first, even if it's just for a nap?  Another option you could try is putting him in a carrier (moby, ergo, etc), while getting her ready for bed (not the bath part though, I'd bring the bouncer in the bathroom for that).

When I first had 2u2, I did a lot of baths in the morning.  I was spent by the end of the day and it was easier just to wash hands and faces at night and bathe them both in the morning.

I agree with this. I tried mostly to do bath when LO was asleep, but if he happened to be awake we would do the bouncy in the bathroom.  We stopped bottles at 1 so we didn't have the bottle before bed, so the actual "bed time" was pretty short, jammies, brush teeth, short story and lights out.

  • In the early days, I took comfort in knowing that in America we overbathe our kids- so I didn't bathe them everyday- I was happy some weeks when they'd get 2 baths!!  :-)

  • Until they could do baths together, youngest goes first. I'd bath, nurse and read to ds2 and put him down. Then I did ds1.

  • I do bedtime alone 6 days/week. So far my strategy is this: 7:00, put baby on and make dinner for toddler and I (usually while my son is in front of the TV or playing quietly). Many nights she'll fall asleep during that time, if not I'll go nurse her and rock her while my son continues watching TV. She's usually out by 7:30, then I have about an hour and a half to eat dinner and play with my son and then put him to bed. It's only recently that she's started staying up later and that does make it more difficult but so far I've been able to put her down first and then do my son later.

Also, baths happen in the morning when my husband is home or in the afternoon when the other child is napping (they sometimes tag team, or one will nap longer than the other. Baths aren't part of our routine, we just take them when we're dirty and have time.
