Blocked duct or mastitis?

How do you tell the difference?  I think I have one of them.  Woke up totally engorged in left breast and after LO fed off it I started having feverish symptoms.  I took ibuprofen and they went away and have stayed away, but my breast has been sore all day and is a pinkish colour.  I don't really feel any lumps anywhere.  Any advice?

  • Call your doctor asap - the quicker you treat mastitis the better!

I had symptoms very similar to yours (fever, pink spot on my breast, very sore with no definite lumps) and it was mastitis. My fever went away but then came back so I did go on antibiotics.

  • That happened to me Thursday. I had a sore engorged boob, some pinkness at the sore area, 101.5 fever, and felt god awful. I immediately took a hot shower and worked the lump out and drained the breast. Felt great the next day but it's still tender and slightly pink. It is possible to have a mild case of mastitis and it resolve itself. If you start feeling bad, get a fever, or have boob pain again, I'd call the doc for antibiotic.

What she said--and if you are working the lump out wear an old shirt or some breast pads! (Although I'd avoid wearing a bra--they can make blocked ducts worse).  When my blocked duct came loose I soaked my shirt with milk before I even knew it!

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • Thanks!

This might sound dumb, but what do you mean by working the lump out?  I have been massaging it and all, but nothing has really happened.  Does a lot of milk come out at once, or does it actually come out as a lump.  I guess it would hurt a ton if it was a lump though so I probably just answered my own question.

  • I massaged the lump moving down towards the nipple while hand expressing. The milk was coming out only on the unaffected side and then after a while suddenly my whole nip was squirting. Mine was only a mild case though. According to Kellymom.com with a clogged duct the milk can get thick and stringy but it's totally safe for baby. That website is the bomb dot com! ;)
