Natural Birth

Husband Coached Childbirth

I'm being a major slacker and just started reading this. I've only gotten to Chapter 3, and I can't stand the tone. It's so Judgey McJudgerson. Like don't drink city water, but write to the bottled water company to ask what's in it. Or "Perhaps you don't want to eat that food." I guess I'm supposed to eat only vegetables I grow myself in autoclaved organic soiling never take a TUMS for my heartburn.

Is the rest of the book like this? Because my hormones can't take this right now and I feel like I want to punch the late Dr. Bradley in the face.

Re: Husband Coached Childbirth

  • I LOATHED it.  The WORST NB book I read.  I heard there is another book by a female author, with something along the lines of, "The Bradley Way" in the title that is much prefered on here (at least a year ago).  I wasn't able to locate it around here though before DS was born.

  • I am a huge Bradley advocate but found that book to be crazycakes. He was revolutionary for his time, and I believe in his method, but his phrasing just doesn't translate well to modern culture. The other Bradley book is much more like what is taught in the classes. Also, I suggest reading Childbirth Without Fear by one of Bradley's mentors. It is an even older book, but I think it translates to modern times much better than Bradley's book.
  • Even before I realized I wanted to have a natural birth the term "husband coached" always made me cringe. The idea that a woman needs her husband to coach her through birth just makes me scoff. Yes men can certainly help and play a role but be the "coach"...yuck.

This is one of a few reasons why I am going with hypnobabies over bradley.

Sorry in advance to those who are offended by my opinion.

Ditto.  I wanted to throat punch the man.

  • Yeah, I wasn't a fan either. Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way is much better! (If you can deal with the black and white 1970's naked pictures of people giving birth. Lol. And for some reason the men are always shirtless too. Gave DH and I lots of laughter....).

  • I just wanted to add that I really found The Birth Partner to be a very helpful read.  I read about a dozen NB books, and then had DH read the one I found the most beneficial, and this was it.  I would really recommend this one.
