Success after IF

XP from PAIF/Multiples. ID triplets?!

SO...long story short. We were scared of the bleeding I've been having, and really waiting to see this heart beat at 6w3d to make us stop worrying. I have learned that I am no where CLOSE to being in control or knowing what to expect. We transferred one grade AB embie on day 5. I saw the heart beat quickly, I loved it! There was a moment of Joy. THEN...the Dr says, here you have the second baby....WHAT!? TWO? and that heartbeat looks good too. MORE JOY. Something about an irregularly shaped uterus at the moment, lima bean shaped instead of round but that it isn't a problem, and should straighten out as the BABIES grow. BABIES?! We transferred one. But wait... "what's that? zoom in bit more...is that a?...let me just get all the information here then I'll talk, everything's fine...(longest pause ever) yes. Yes. You have a third heart beat in there too." Shocked is not the appropriate word, but neither is stunned. I don't think they aptly describe how unbelievable I'm finding this. With ONE embryo, THREE babies? All with regular heart beats (I either didn't catch the number, or I forgot it, but I know they are all in normal range). I know this sounds like MUD (does it?) but I'm real. Also a little back story on me---I'm 125 lb pre pregnancy. CERTAINLY petite, and scared out of my mind for the health of all four of us. DID I JUST SAY FOUR?! MH is joyful that there IS a heartbeat(s), and that my body is able to maintain a pregnancy for at least 6 weeks (never been pregnant before) I know its really early, and sometimes one or two of them will stop living (do thy get absorbed? is that vanishing twin? can you have vanishing triplet?) DH and I both want healthy babies, be it one, two, or three. I'm in disbelief. I'm sure I'll be posting more later, but if ANYONE knows how the RE's office is a place for unexpected curveballs, its my gals on PAIF/TTTC. My RE is already talking about selective reduction, if that can even be done in this case. PHEW--what a whirl wind day! Anyone have a similar experience?Bless you for reading this far! I'm sorry my entry is or record length. I guess I'm good at breaking the mould today.

  • Wow! That's a lot to take in! We transferred 4 so wasn't surprised to see 2 heartbeats around 6 wks. When I went in at 8 wks there was only one heartbeat so one "vanished". No bleeding. It just reabsorbed. When do you go back? It's a long wait for that next US!! Congrats!

  • Wow!!  That would certainly be a huge shock!!!  I can only imagine the crazy range of emotions you are going through!  Good luck, I hope that this all works out well for you all!!  Congratulations!!!
  • Wow, that is crazy. Of course ID twins from IVF isn't unheard of, but triplets?!

Any chance you also ovulated around the same time and one or two were conceived naturally? Just thinking of all the possibilities.

  • First off, congratulations! There are a couple of ID triplet mamas on the multiples board...I am not one of them.

I would definitely get to a MFM immediately. We did not reduce my pregnancy, obviously. One of the things I remember reading (I think in Dr. Luke) is that reducing a pregnancy does not decrease the risk, once pregnant with 2 or 3 + the body will respond the same way regardless. With it being ID triplets I would think there could be a greater risk of losing all the babies if the pregnancy were reduced (depends on what they're sharing).

Again, congratulations! It isn't easy, but it's doable!

  • THanks all. Good point about the ovulation, but I don't know if that'd be possible. I had my egg retrieval earlier in the month, so I'd assume they would have taken out all that were there. I couldn't have ovulated before then, because I was taking medicines to prevent it...and even if I did, I was so sore from all the eggs I don't think DH and I had sex for a before egg retrieval, and after that we were on a no sex drs order. I don't know, everything is turned upside down right now, and I'm done pretending I know why what's happening is happening :-)

My next u/s is Thursday. My RE will monitor me at 6 weeks, 7 weeks, 8 weeks, and then put me in the hands of a MFM from then on out. Its certainly a strange emotion that I have right now. Some are elated, some are shocked, and some are outright sad. I am trying not to feel guilty about the sad part, I'm sure its part of digesting all of this.

    Thanks again!

  • Robin - congratulations!  I understand how terrifying this is, I was terrified and I transferred 4 embryo's so I was always aware of the possibility. Definitely take pp advice and go see a MFM.  They were able to talk statisticL  #'s with me about the chances of complications with the pregnancy but also treated me like it was entirely possible to carry all three.  Also, I'm on the smaller side 5"4' and about 130 when I found out, my boys made it to 35 weeks 4 days and all came home with me 4 days later.  They are the healthy, vibrant lights of my life. • wow. congratulations!

there are certainly lost triplets as well as lost twins; in my case we got pregnant with twins but lost one very early (it made it to the gestational sac stage but not the heartbeat stage). lost multiples are very common, although i think it's a good sign that they all have heartbeats. i don't have any advice on selective reduction or anything, i am not educated about this stuff, but i'm sure you will make it work whatever you decide. wishing you a very happy and healthy pregnancy!

  • congrats!

have you posted on the multiples board? Pam has ID triplets and will be a great resource for you.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I was originally pregnant with triplets- ID twins and a singleton. At my first appointment one of the ID twins' heartbeat was very low and we ended up losing the twins very early on. I continued to have a very healthy pregnancy for my daughter.

If you have good heartbeats that's a good start, ditto PP to go see a good MFM. It's scary, but you can do it. Don't feel bad about being scared. It's a lot to take in.

  • Incredible!

My girls are ID from FET.  I put my last 3 embryos back in and one split.  :)

Best of luck to you!  And yes, ditch the OB altogether and be seen strictly by a Perinatologist!  You'll be in great hands. :)

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

Robin, Congrats again!!!  I responded to your original post on PAIF.  I have triplet boys (two identical, one fraternal).

I'm happy to offer any support, advice, or information!!!  PM me anytime you want to talk.  I'd even be happy to give you my personal email address if it'd be easier for you to connect that way (vs through PMing).
