Babies R Us - Registry Nightmare?

Last night a friend mentioned to me that she hates buying baby shower gifts at BRU. She said that because the one in our town is a smaller one inside of a Toys R Us, the aisle numbers listed on the registry don't actually match up with the aisles in the store. Apparently it's quite frustrating for people! I've never bought a registry gift from there, so I don't know.

Anyone have any experience with this? I'm thinking I might just register at Target instead, and then use MyRegistry.com for anything I want from elsewhere.

Re: Babies R Us - Registry Nightmare?

  • Absolutely zero experience with a baby registry, but every single registry I've ever bought a wedding gift from did not specify where in the store the item was located. I would think if you wanted to buy something you'd just ask a clerk what you're looking for and they could point you in the right way. I don't see this as being a nightmare at all.

  • We did BRU and Target when we had our first kiddo (shower was summer 2010) and had zero problems.  If you do two stores, it gives people options.  I was always told (bridal and baby) to register at 2+ stores for showers to give people options.

  • Lurking.. but our BRU is in a Toys R Us too, and I've bought plenty of gifts there for showers - you have to look a little bit, but it's not that complicated to find things on the registry.

I will say that when you register, go to a full size BRU, because the Toys R Us may not have what you want. Also, when buying off the registry, people can order offline if they don't want to drive. and have it delievered to the Toys R Us.

  • I don't really see what the issue is.  All of the baby stuff is in the same general area of a Toys R Us.  If there are bottles on the registry.....go find the bottles.  Blankets....go find the bedding.  People really shouldn't need aisle numbers, it isn't rocket science.

On the other hand, if this is the store you need to register at and they don't have a large selection I would go there and Target just so you can get everything and some variety in case the selection is limited.

  • I know what kind of store she's talking about. We have a few in this area (in addition to regular ones). My honest opinion? She's being lazy and complaining about something really stupid. ASK someone for help! Buy online! The stores even have special pickup options where you pay online and it's at the register waiting for you.

The BRU sections in TRU stores are small. It's not hard to find things because there is so little there.

I'd stay away from Target. Their return policy is stressful with registries.

  • Finding a gift on any registry takes a little time, but I wouldn't say a nightmare.  I've bought many gifts at BRU and it isn't any worse than another store.  People may find it easier at Target since it usually on a couple of aisles of baby stuff as opposed to a whole store.

  • Our local BRU is connected to a Toys R Us - the store is probably 2/3 toys and 1/3 BRU.  When we registered we drove to another town that had a full-size BRU so that we could see more of the big stuff in person.  I've never had any more trouble at our local BRU/TRU than the bigger store, if I cannot find something I ask.  DH and I still registered at BRU.

Side Note - Registries are never perfect.  In my area stores are stocked regionally so what you register for in NE Ohio may not be in stores in NW Ohio (I've found this more so for wedding registries than baby registries).

  • Yes, the aisle numbers are wrong. It really wasn't too hard to find the gifts I was looking for though. DH even found one.

  • She is correct.  Another problem with both Babies R Us and Target is that they frequently mess up the registry when people purchase from it.  I had several gifts that were never marked as received, even though the people took the registry to the register with them.

With that said, you may want to still register there so you get the registry completion coupon.

  • I hate Babies R us. There system is horrible and there staff is rude as well. They are helpful at all. Plus half the stuff on the registry for my friend we had to pre order and it doesn't say that on teh registry. We aren't using them at all.

  • Not with that kind of problem, but trying to register online with BRU can be a pain since they have different merchandise at different stores, it doesn't show many pictures and often doesn't show that items are available in store. I went in store and finished the registry which wasn'tas bad. I also registered at Target and Burlington Coat Factory (love their baby selection!)

  • Can you order from the registry online at Baby's R Us?

When I had my bridal shower, a lot of people ordered my gift online and then I picked it up at my home store.  It was way better for me because the shower was in my hometown, not my current town.  But it was also easier for them because they didn't have to go looking around in the stores.

But some people don't like making purchases online.

I think your friend just likes to complain (or hates shopping in general). We have BOTH a large BRU and one inside a ToysRUs. I've bought gifts at both. It is not hard to find things at either store. The stand alone Babies R Us stores have about much more selection though (like 4 aisles of feeding supplies rather than 1).

The ones I've been to inside a ToysRUs all have a separate part of the store for baby stuff. This part of the store is not very large, and things are grouped with similar items. There is a row of bottles/feeding supplies, baby gear, etc. I really don't see how someone could have a hard time finding something. I never look at the aisle numbers on a registry. It's common sense that if you're looking for a stroller, go to the aisle with all of the strollers...know what I mean?

  • As pp have said I'd recommend 2 stores.  I did Target and BuyBuyBaby.  Targets are all over the country and you can get everything online which makes it easier for my friends and family that live across the country and upstate.  There aren't a lot of BuyBuyBaby's in some areas, but where I live it is popular so local people will most likely go there.

  • While I find buying gifts off registries in BRU to be sort of a PITA, especially when trying to piece together a gift of several items, I always end up asking someone for help.  But, I still plan on registering there.  From what I've heard from ladies on here, Target's return policy is AWFUL.  Check out Amazon.com as an alternative.

  • I have never had any luck buying anything off the registeries at BRU. Many of their items are not where the list says they should be OR the store doesn't carry half of what IS on the registry. When you try to find someone to help you, they are too busy to help, and this is at one of the bigger stores. Personally, I love the baby section at BB&B and the employees in that department are trained on all of their baby stuff AND they walk with you when you register for your baby stuff to make sure you get what you need and leave what you don't. I did notice that if you register online instead of going to the store to do it, MOST of what is on the registry has to be bought online too.

  • I think it depends on where you live.  Some of the stores are stand alone stores and others are inside Toys R Us...there's definitely a difference!  You can also opt to complete your Babies R Us registry online.
Coming August 2012...Baby Braxton Sebastian Grant!
  • Buy online.

Pick up in store. No shipping costs.

Then the employees have to go search for it and it is all in a box at the front register so you run in, give them your receipt, pick up your stuff, & leave all within 5 minutes.

I did this for a friend's baby shower gift, it was the easiest.

  • I signed up for myregistry.com and I am so impressed with it.  It's a great website!  First of all you can drag a button to your internet browser bar that says "Add to Registry"  and from whatever website you are on you get a pop up window that asks you if you would like to add it to your registry.  I have looked at probably 10 sites now and they all work with the website.  It also has an iphone app where you can manage or review your registry from your phone.  The app has a scanner that works really well too.  When I was in BRU yesterday I found a few items I liked and scanned them with the app.  It will ask you where you would like to buy them from (Amazon, BRU, etc) and show you the prices at each of the places before you add them.  You can also categorize and move the items in your registry.  Oh, and it has this feature too that when people buy you gift it keeps track of who bought what so you can send thank you cards.  So far I love it!
