Baby Names

Pretentious girl names?

Which baby girl names sound pretentious to you?

Not trying to offend anyone, but these names ring slightly pretentious to me.  (Of course, it really depends on the people / child):

Sloan
Blair
Charlotte
Isabel

What are some names that I haven't listed that you think sound pretentious?

  • I am MORTALLY offended that you think Charlotte is pretentious! It is a beautiful name full of classic imagery! How dare you insult such a PERFECT name for MY baby! .... ..

And DH is yelling at me to stop being sarcastic online....  :)

Agree with Sloane. That name has bugged me since Ferris Bueller.
    Veronica
    Priscilla
    Camilla
    Aurora
    Claudia
any of the Addison/Madison type names. Annoying and pretentious

Boys' names like Grover, Brooks, Clayton, Grayson - stuff that sounds like it came out of a snooty east coast prep school
Most surnames for boys - Keaton, Hudson, Jackson, Nelson, Harrison, Weston, Bronson, Kingston, Preston, Easton, Payton, Harding
    And the name Jagger.

I have a slightly different view. I find the poofy princessy names pretentious.

    Arabella
    Gianna
    Arriana
    Gabriella
    Tatiana

    Gianna is a princess name?

I agree with this. The names OP listed don't seem NEARLY as pretentious to me as long, flowery names like the above. I'd add Alexandra, Valencia, Georgiana, Juliana, Valentina (on my list, don't care), and Seraphina to that list.

Also, any name used to show off just how educated and cultured the parents are. European place names, obscure mythical characters, and little-known (but important) historical surnames come to mind.

  • I wouldnt say that any of those names sound pretentious. Sloan sounds dark and masculine to me but not pretentious.

Names like Francesca, Anastasia, Maximillian and Sebastian sound pretentious to me.

My Tessa is a rough and tumble tomboy. She won't be yachting anytime soon.

Don't feel too bad - all three of my DDs names have been listed: Arianna, Alessandra, and Serafina. LOL.

As someone who has a Sloane of her own, I can say that I agree with you that it does ring a bit bold in a stilted way . . . I've always rather enjoyed that :)
  • Just curious, as we've considering Blair - does it just come off as pretentious because of Gossip Girl, or for other reasons?

This is who I think of when I hear the name Blair:

    image

(That's Blair Warner, the rich one a la "The Facts of Life" . . . great hair, though.)

  • I think of Blake as a pretentious name as well, along the same lines as Blair.

  • Peyton, Preston, Grayson.  Wannabe pretentious names.

I have more trouble coming up with pretentious names for girls, though I agree that Sloane fits the bill, as do other cold-sounding last-name names.  Marin sounds kind of uptight and pretentious to me also.

FWIW, disagree that Charlotte, Isabel, and Genevieve are pretentious.

I'll always think of Lisa Whelchel when I hear Blair. Her hair really was spectacular, wasn't it?

  • Penelope.

Penelope thinks she's so great, and she's not.

  • Genevieve is a traditional french name and only pretentious if you have NO connections to french culture. Otherwise a pretty name.
