My best friend is 23 weeks pregnant with her second. You may remember me posting several weeks ago about how she found out her baby has spina bifida, which in and of itself has been just awful news, but she has been SO positive about it. Yesterday her and her husband went to the Children's hospital to run tests and see if she was a candidate for in-utero surgery and before they even got to tests FOR the baby, they discovered she was already 1 cm dilated and 50% effaced, even having some contractions. They said that with the extra fluid from the spina bifida, her cervix was thinning, and her uterus was stretching, tricking her body into thinking it was time for delivery.
They immediately transferred her to another hospital to be monitored, keeping her overnight. Looks like she will either have an amnio to drain the fluid or surgery to suture her cervix. She has been through SO much already with this news, and this is just SUCH another hurdle for her to jump. I feel so awful for her and her husband.
Also, today actually is her first son's 1st birthday. She's stuck in the hospital about an hour away from him and is SO upset to be missing his first birthday. They could really use some positive thoughts and prayers.
I know this is a stretch, but has anyone else known or been through something like this? I'm SO worried they are going to have the baby early. He's only 1 lb as of today. T&Ps welcomed.
Update: Unfortunately, my friend discovered today, after reviewing the amnio results with the doctors, that her baby has a chromosomal defect called Triploidy Syndrome (69 chromosomes) and will either die before birth or shortly after. Most with this miscarry within 15 weeks. They are nearly 24 weeks. They are completely devastated.
Just thought I'd offer the update for those who asked. Thanks for your t&ps.

you know that I'm praying! She told me today that the party is still on despite being on "light bed rest."
Yeah, me too! Yay!
Oh no! I am so sorry. This is just devastating. How did the doctors not pick this up from the amino earlier?
She didn't have an amnio, originally. She went in for her 20 a/s and they picked up the spina bifida. So then she went to have tests done to see if she was a candidate for in utero surgery and it led to them realizing she had way too much fluid present and did the amnio then.

Wow. Count your blessings.
I'm thinking & praying for you and your friend's family.
