I never intended for Aiden to have a security item but he fell in love with the blanket he's always slept with and he has to have his "banky" every night at bed. The issue is when that item meets an untimely death of sorts, moments before bed. Tonight, fresh out of the bath Aiden ran into his room and proceeded to pee and get it all over his blanket. There was no way I could get it washed and dried for him to take to bed so I substituted another one but it broke my heart to hear him whimper "Banky? Whehahyouuuuu? Baaaaankyyyyy....."
Update: Thankfully he fell asleep without too much of an issue. This morning I woke up at 8:15 and he was still (amazingly) asleep. I told DH I was concerned he may have slipped into a deep depression over missing his "banky" :-p but it turns out he was fine
Re: The danger with lovies
Unfortunately, his is. It's a hand crocheted blue blanket that a relative bought for him a craft fair. Ugh. My MIL just finished crocheted him a new one that has a similar feel but it's white. Might have to dye it blue :-p

One of a kind?! That is rough. Good luck! Any desire to introduce a new one and phase out the first love? FX that the night goes just fine for you.
Our DS is still obsessed with the FP Seahorse. We have 2 at all times and have already thrown a third out because he gnaws on them so much. Even on our ride home from dinner tonight, DH and I were wondering how many we will end up buying and if he'll take one to college. Sigh.
Liam's lovie is a bunny that was a special item from Borders. It was $6 with the purchase of any book. Since Borders is out of business, we searched ebay for weeks for a back up Miles the Bunny. $20 plus shipping. It was like someone knew a desperate parent would pay anything to replace this lovie. As you can see, Miles is slightly loved:
Reese has just one--a stuffed lamb. She started preferring it early on--before 6 months. My husband's co-worker bought it for her, in a little store in MA (We live in NJ) while on vacation. Of course I looked for the brand (jellycat) and the lamb that she loves is retired. So impulsively I bought 2 extra on Amazon. She rotates through all of them.
Luckily she hasn't had a preference for a blanket yet--since all of the blankets she has are homemade
Oh yes, there is a huge market on eBay for replacement lovies. We left DS's in a hotel room, and I paid $32 for a new one. And it was orginally about $9 from Target. They knew exactly what they were selling, the entire eBay store was "lovies" of all different kinds for insane prices.
You just described Harrison's lovey:
DS loves his Aden and Anais swaddle blankets. This winter we bought two thicker ones. He has to sleep with one. I am thankful he doesn't mind which print, since often times we have several in the wash.
I have a friend whose daughter's lovie is a stuffed decorative Halloween cat that cannot be replaced. It has been lost several times(even had to turn around on vacation to get it at a restaurant it was left at). My friend has had several mental breakdowns over the lovie being lost.
I am thankful, DS hasn't taken to anything that is one-of-a-kind.
DS's lovey is a blue blanket that we got for free from a yard sale. It's pretty simple so I thought finding a back up would be easy. Well, it wasn't. Then a friend of a friend said she had one just like I that her kid didn't use. She gave it to me and altho it's white DS seemed to cling to it. Until one day. He was pissed and I gave him the white one and he practically said "WTF is this!?" as he threw it down. Maybe I need to check eBay....
Yup, I buy two lovies per kid so there's a backup in case on gets peed on, puked on, or dropped in mud.
DD just thinks we are SUPER fast at cleaning her pooh bear.
