Babies: 6 - 9 Months

(XP) Lurker Q - Baby sign language ...

(Also posted in 3-6 months)

I'm very interested in trying to use baby sign language with my son when he is old enough.  My cousin used it with her little girl and it was so easy to communicate with her.

For those of you who use it or are planning to use it ...

When to start?

How to start?

Any tips?

Thanks in advance for your input. :)

Re: (XP) Lurker Q - Baby sign language ...

  • We are starting now, because I read that it can take several weeks for baby to learn the association, and longer to learn the sign to sign it to you.

We only do milk and mommy consistently.  I'm trying to consistently include daddy, dog, diaper, and eat.

All I started doing was anytime I'd show him the bottle, I'd make the "milk" sign and say "milk.  Do you want milk?" and give him the bottle".  When he looks at me and I'm talking to him, I sign mom and say "Are you looking at mom?  Where's mom?  Here I am!" while making the sign.

  • If you know nothing about ASL then the very best place to start is www.signingtime.com.  It has the very best DVD's I've seen and the most true to real ASL.  Plus, all of the kids signing on the videos are babies and toddlers (which helps you know what's to be expected) and there's music to go along with all of the signs.

  • I think we started around 6 months. We only do milk, more and eat right now. I think she understands milk, but she is not able to do it herself yet.

We have the Sign with your Baby book and dvd that we went through. It is based on American Sign Language.

  • We used www.babysignlanguage.com for reference and sign "eat", "more", and "all done" and started maybe 3 months ago. He seems to understand "all done" and starting to catch on to "eat" but doesn't sign back at all.

  • We started around 4 months with milk, diaper change, bath, book and 'all done'.  We recently started including more, massage, play and music.  He seems to understand some of them, and he's definitely interested in my hands when I sign.  My book - "Baby Signing 123" says that they won't start signing back until about 9 months.  From my experience, you should start incorporating the signs right away (just do them when you say the words).  The biggest challenge for me has been remembering to do them!
