backscatter scan machines at airport security

I travel a lot, but this week was the first time since I found out I'm pregnant.  Yesterday at LAX, like an idiot, I walked into the backscatter scan machines in the security line.  I typically zone out while being shuffled through and ignore TSA, otherwise I get super irritated and angry.  So, anyway, I walked out and realized...OMG, I'm pregnant.

Any other traveling ladies go through those stupid things?  Did your doctor or midwife give you advice on whether or not to go through them?

  • I don't have any advice, but I would totally feel the same way! If it was unsafe, they'd have warnings posted (I hope).

I was at LAX last week, and the five people before me got body scanned, but they put them through a separate line. It didn't even dawn on me until after I went through the separate line that I was selected to not be body scanned. Everyone else behind me was body scanned also. I was totally relieved. Then I got offended. Do I not look dangerous? I can be dangerous! ;)

  • I'm sure it's fine, or else there would be warnings up. If given the choice, I would prefer the normal metal detector though.

  • I Always go through the other line because I am holding my son, I am sure it is fine but next time you travel I would ask for the other line. when I was far along with my son, the TSA lady told me that I could opt for the hand held scanner if I wanted. I didn't but it's good to know there are options.

  • I travel about 1-2 times a month for work. I avoid those scanners. I just think the technology is too new for me to be comfortable.

(Disclaimer: I haven't really done research on this.)

I fly a lot. Last week I told the TSA person I'm pregnant, and he told me to go through the regular scan instead (on previous flights this pregnancy I have not been in the backscanner line, so it was the first time it happened to me).

Then yesterday, on my return trip, I ended up at the backscanner again, and the (female) TSA person acted like I was making such a big fuss over nothing. I kept wondering, well why did the other TSA agent make a point of putting me through the regular scanner, then? And then she said something that really clinched it: "These backscanners are more harmful to your cell phone than to YOU." Oh yeah, right! Now I'm really comfortable going through that! I opted for the pat-down instead.

Riiiiggghhhhhtt!!!  That is exactly why I zone out and ignore TSA agents!  Did she just make that up right there?!
