I'm due in July, and trying not to go crazy with my new obsession over CD. Starting to order diapers for my stash - not sure yet if I can convince hubby to CD exclusively, or if we will also be using some eco-friendly disposables... I'm thinking I need about 15 NB size, and 25-30 one-size...
The diapers I have ordered so far all have snaps for closure. I think this is the best way to go, especially once baby gets older and curious about her diaper... But my hubby has arthritis & I wonder if he will eventually complain about the snaps.
Does anybody use CD with Velcro as their main brand of CD? which brands would you recommend, which brands would you NOT recommend? and why...
Anybody have experiences with both velcro & snaps? what do you use now and what made you decide on that style?
Mamas who CD from day one - how many NB diapers did you buy? and was it enough? At what age, and at how many pounds, did your baby start to fit into one-size diapers? Or for moms who use diapers that have sizing systems, at what point did your baby start to fit into the next size up?
What brand(s) would you recommend for NB diapers? (I believe I would like to use pocket diapers but would consider some AIO for my NB stash...)
Thanks so much for any advice you can give me!
Re: velcro vs snaps / buying NB stash
Snaps will definitely wear longer with the one size, but velcro is infinitely easier to ues in the NB stage (when your baby won't rip off his/her diaper in the first place. If your husband has arthritis, you might see how that works for them, many people have a few easier to use diapers in their stash for dads and grandparents. As to what you have in your stash, it's definitely just a personal preference. Velcro wears out faster, but it is easier to get a quick fit on it and it's less fiddly. I have both snap and velcro for the NB stage, but I only have snaps for later on because I prefer them. LittleFoxDiapers.com has some velcro BG 4.0s on sale right now if you wanted to add a couple just in case (if you were wanting to use those at all).
If you're also using disposables, or don't mind washing every day, 15 would work for a NB, but if you were able to add a few more to 24-30, you could easily wash every other day.
Pocket NB are a little hard to stuff, but they work pretty well. FB XS are my favorite, and Kawaii make a few that get very good reviews too. I have more prefolds and fitteds (kissaluv) with covers for daytime, and I have BG XS and Lil Joeys for nighttime (LJs are snaps, so the jury is out).
With my first DD I only CD'd part time. I used prefolds with Bummis wraps over. It was so nice to have the velcro. And since they aren't used very long velcro is what I am going to use this time around. For the most part for covers and AIOs. I will get some WAHM fitteds which will be snaps.
For OS or bigger sized diapers I always go with snaps (unless it is a super good deal) because they wear much better. Plus in the older ages they learn to unvelcro their diaper and that can lead to messes.
NBs you change so often that ease of velcro is best.
We have both, but I prefer velcro. I feel like I get can get a better fit with velcro, and I feel like it is easier for daycare and grandparents. DS can unsnap his diapers just as easily as he unvelcro them.
I have found that the velcro on Blueberrys tends to be stronger and last better than on BGs.
My LO can undo aplix, but I still reach for it first every time. She leaves it alone as long as she is dressed. It's much easier to get a good fit with aplix, and faster too. Sometimes trying to change LO's diaper is like wrestling an alligator with 12 legs. I can fasten aplix no matter which way she is twisting.
For the NB stage I would only get aplix. Then have a mix of both aplix and snaps for when your LO is older.
I really like the grovia and RaR aplix. Both have held up really well.
I prefer snaps simply because they don't wear out as fast. If you're hoping to use the diapers with more than one child, snaps are better. However, velcro does get get a more accurate fit. If you're crafty you can probably replace the velcro on cloth diapers (I've heard BumGenius has velcro replacement kits, but I've never looked into it myself).
If you're still unsure, some diaper store sites have CD diaper trials you may consider doing:

For the NB stage, I went with sposies. The last thing I needed in those first few weeks was more laundry. We also couldn't afford a separate stash of NB diapers. Fortunately DS fit into his one-size BumGenius diapers at 3 weeks (big baby!).
Well, we bought one package of disposable diapers and used those for the first few days, but were really excited to start using cloth. Ds was 8lbs 3.5 oz at birth, and our OS diapers didn't start fitting until 10 lbs. Now he's over 12 and they fit really well. We didn't have enough diapers that would fit ds at first, so I ordered 13 Kawaii little green bamboo diapers (velcro pocket diapers that fit 6-20 lbs). They are still our favourite diapers, and dh reaches for them every time he changes a diaper. I would definitely recommend those for the nb stage. With 13 of those, 3 fitted diapers and covers, and some random prefolds, we did laundry every day (I always made sure there were at least 3 diapers that were not prefolds that we could use).
Now we still use those, 12 Kawaii OS snap diapers, and 8 pre-loved Bumgenius 4.0 with velcro. Dh loves the velcro, he finds the snaps really tricky. He was even talking to one of his friends at work (also a CD dad), and they both agreed that the velcro is better. It does wear out, but you can get a better fit. I think that if your dh has arthritis, and you want him to change diapers, you should build a stash of mainly velcro pockets.
So for nb recommendations, definitely Kawaii. They are cheaper than other brands, and the quality is actually pretty good. Plus, I know ds won't fit in them for that much longer. He is two months old now, and I would still keep them for the next baby. They have some larger diapers with velcro that I want to try out too, just have to convince dh!
We didn't start CDing until DD was 3 months but MH has always preferred the velcro while I prefer the snaps.
It's 7 months in now and a few of our aplix are coming undone already. They do give you a better overall fit though.
We have covers that are both snap and velcro. The velcro are definitely easier but totally not durable. We have been CDing for 4 months now and the velcro feels like it's wearing out. Since these are sized covers, I don't really care. If they were OS diapers I would be pissed. All future pocket/AIO diapers we order will be snaps for this reason.
Baby is a skinny one and we still use prefolds and covers on her. We started using pocket diapers and AIOs (mostly at night) starting around week 12.
For the NB phase, I would just do prefolds and covers and get a few BG AIO XS.
You will probably need more than 15 newborn diapers. I'd recommend at least 24 to wash every day and 30 to get to 2 days between washes. DS fit into his OS diapers at 10 lbs, about a month old for him. His legs were too skinny before that.
I recommend prefolds and covers over pockets or AIOs. You're only going to be using newborn diapers for a month or two, so to me it's not worth dumping a whole lot of money into. Plus I'm reusing his newborn prefolds in his OS flips. I would not recommend the newborn covers I used though because the elastic was wearing out by the end.
I've used velcro and snaps. Even with the laundry tabs, the velcro would always come off and attach to another diaper. I prefer the snaps, plus I know they'll last long enough for my next baby.
