Cloth Diapering

What else do I need?

I'm just trying to be prepared as far as my newborn stash is concerned, I figure I'll get more once she's here and I can figure out what I like.

So this is what I have:

 4 lil joeys

6 Bumgenius newborn all-in-ones

1 Bummis Tiny Fit

I know I'll probably need a few more.. but what should I get? Like something for overnights? I think I want to use primarily all-in-ones because I want it to be super easy and cost isn't a huge concern.

Re: What else do I need?

  • I don't think you need to worry about ON diapers just yet - your newborn will be waking every few hours and will likely need to be changed often. I have a 10 month old and we need at least 24 diapers to get through 2 days. Newborns need so many more diapers - probably 12-20 per day. So if you wash every other day, you will probably need at least 30-40 diapers. I know a lot of people go with prefolds and/or fitteds with covers to cut down on costs since you need so many diapers for newborns. This is probably what we will do with our next LO. Prefolds fit baby very well and clean easily. And you can reuse covers several times before washing so you don't need so many. If cost isn't a concern then I'd just buy a few different types of NB AIOs and pockets. To me, I jut can't justify spending so much for maybe 3 months of use. I'd put that money into the OS diapers that your LO will wear from around 10lbs to potty training.

You need a lot more diapers.

My nb stash consists of 8 KL0s, 12 prefolds, 4-5 covers, 2 lil joey's, 3 BG NB aio, 2 grovia aio, and one or two other aios.... and I plan to get at least 12 more prefolds before LO arrives (waiting until after my shower this weekend).  The aios will be reserved for middle of the night and daddy changes.

You won't need an ON solution at least until LO has regained back birthweight, since until then you need to wake every 3 hours to feed if you are fortunate enough to have a sleeper (most babies will wake sooner than this on their own).

My LO regained her birth weight in a week or two but was definitely not sleeping more than 2-3 hours at a time for a while! I think ON diapers aren't really necessary for at least 4-8 weeks. And even then, it depends on your baby.

  • by the time you figure out what you like in the newborn diapers and buy them and get them shipped to you the baby will most likely have almost outgrown them. Stick out tongue  If I could do it all over again, I would have done prefolds during the day and AIO for overnight changes only-  I would have saved a ton of money and prefolds with a snappy are easier than you realize -  Prefolds are also alot easier to wash

  • I ended up buying NB prefolds when my DD was 4 weeks old and I wish I would have done it sooner.  I wasted a ton of money on Lil' Joeys (they didn't work for us) and I used the BG NB's in a trial and it didn't work for us either.  If money isn't a factor, I would buy more Tot Bot TiniFits.  This is my favorite diaper.  We have 8 and I tend to save them for when we're out and about and ON.  I use the prefolds while we are home and now we are starting to use some OS dipes.

ON I am still using my Tot Bot TiniFits. I put two inserts in the pocket.  My DD will sleep 8 hours straight and we haven't had any problems.  She has also gone 10 hours a night with out a leak as well.

  • I used prefolds and covers when LO was a NB. However for me money was an issue. They grow out of the newborn ones so quickly its crazy to spend TOO much money on them. I know a lot of people hate them but I also used g diapers when she was a NB and they worked great for us.
