Bfing with teeth

Forgive me, I once posted this on the bfing board, but didn't get a response so I'm trying again.

Dd has always had a poor latch, but now tht she has her 4 top teeth are in it is out of control painful.   Right now I have a scab/blister on the base of my left nipple that sears  when she eats.  I've tried the "boob taco" to get more in her mouth, but it's not working,  she rakes my breast with her little razors.

Any tips? Please? Pleeeeeease?

  • Ouch I had this happen to me, I had to be adamant about holding her head close... and after having never used the football hold It was my favorite when this happened. It really helped me by paying close attention and holding her head, at first she would fight me holding her head so close (I had gotten pretty liberal with her latch) but I made it a routine and didn't let her improperly latch and she started holding a closer latch.

She is very young but you can certainly praise heavily when she latches good, stroke her head and say "Thank  you, Thank you that is nice"

  • Ditto PP, except for the football hold which never seemed to work for us. I worked really hard at getting DD to take in as much breast as possible when she latched, including the "boob taco" move. I also kept my breast supported with my hand the entire time she nursed, like I did when she was a newborn, so she wouldn't slip down on the nipple. And I got religious about putting expressed breastmilk and lanolin on my nipples again after every feeding, went without a bra as often as I could, slept in a super loose cotton T, took Advil quite a bit to help with the pain, etc. Eventually DD figured out how to latch properly with all the teeth (she had 8 by the time she was 9 mos)! It took probably 2 months of pain, bleeding nipples, etc before things improved, but now we're back to absolutely pain-free nursing and I'm so glad I stuck it out!

Even if it's too painful to use the side with the scab/blister, make sure you continue to empty it by pumping. Especially with broken skin, you're at risk for mastitis otherwise (which I've had twice and isn't fun).

  • Thank you so much for the tips!  I tried some different holds today and they at least kept her teeth off of the scab which felt much better.  I'll keep working on it and hopefully one day soon I won't look like I was mauled when she's done :)
