NSAIFR: xp: My Neighbor just put dog down of a gazillion years.

So sad.  Can you help me figure best way to be supportive and remind me of what to say/not say?  We had to do this a few years ago x2 but I think I blocked it out.  I also fear putting my foot in my mouth.

What gesture could I make that would be appreciated? 

We are meeting at the curb for wine.  (we often meet outside our houses to bs and such - (such = drink)).

    I would treat it the same way you would had she lost a family member - because for her it was a member of the family. Be sure not to say things like "Oh well you can get a new puppy", because there will be no replacing this one.
    A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
    After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
    My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

    I've never been through this...so I'm totally spitballing here, but what about getting them a lilac bush or something to plant in his/her honor?  Something that blooms so they can think about the pup in the spring when they lost him and have something pretty to show for it.  Just a thought.  So sad.

    I really like this idea.  She really does like to garden.  Thanks for the suggestions.
